Yes
seens as were coming up to a new decade i wondered what people thought has been their favourite gadget of this decade, can be anything photography related from pre production to post processing.

i cant really think of my favourite as ive only owned my DSLR for a year now and even thought ive been into photography fro 9 years and counting this last year is where it really kicked off.

my favourite is probably the gorrillapod or the lowepro fastpack.

whats yours?

Oooh good question!

Gadget of the decade for me would have to be pocketwizards. The ease with which I can replicate studio lighting patterns with speedlights and the newfound freedom to take lighting to the subject has helped to revolutionise the way I think about lighting on location.

I still like natural light where possible and that will always be my first port of call but there is nothing wrong with getting creative with lighting and that's what PW's do for me. :)

If we can include software I would have to suggest Adobe Lightroom. This was the application I really needed and whilst Apple's Aperture was a good product Lightroom had the additional features that made my job so much easier and was just what I was looking for.

If it's hardware then I have to put a vote in for the iMac. Not the cheapest product on the market, but the idea of having a monitor and computer all in a desktop product was a of stroke of inspiration. It's strange no other manufacturer has followed Apples lead.

Don't really own enough gadgets but probably my Elinchrom Skyports; although not TTL they are invaluable these days for me when doing location shoots where line-of-sight isn't a luxury

Satnav for getting me to my photographic destination. ;)

Nice idea nicked from C5's 'The Gadget Show' ;)

Mine has two parts - OCF triggers (Skyports too) and HDR software as I'm using the two together to create a new business opportunity for me hereabouts, which is a) different to anyone else around here, and b) pish easy :)

software can count as it is part of post processing. may i add photoshop elements is a brilliant bit of kit for the average consumer and has changed the way we edit.

BTW bet you didnt know that photoshop might be in the dictionary soon as a basis of photoshopped which means to edit. same with "google it"

thats actually where i got the idea from:clap: how did you know:D

Nikons CLS is great, just starting to play with it properly and also Lightroom.

Yep we did

As is the new meaning of 'shopped' - as a slang version meaning to have been edited

Honestly these youngsters think they invent everything :D

Canon 300D.... the first DSLR under £1000 with kit lens (which meant I could afford it); in fact i seem to remember all the others were over £2000 in 2003. It has over a 5.5MP sensor, which was deemed to be the acceptable level to compete with film (at the time). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EOS_300D

Difficult to choose! I'd have to go with the almost nightshooting Nikons (not that I can afford one), the low light capability is amazing from what I have seen.

Didn't Amstrad do this years and years ago!!!

My mate's first DSLR and the first one I got my hands on.

Yes with the Amstrad 464, then the 664 and then 6128, had both the 464 and 6128 before moving to my first PC a 286, which cost £1500 back in 1989 complete with a massive 40mb drive :D

How about Sandisk Extreme III memory cards? There's nothing (well, almost nothing) more annoying than having a really cute little furry animal cornered in your view finder and then the camera locks up because you're using slow cards and its buffer has filled up.

Tivo. By far the best tv guide and tv recording device made so far. Only killed off in this country by their own stupid marketing.

In photography terms I would say the Canon 300D. It was the first affordable dSLR and kickstarted the whole re-ingition in the interest of photography.

In gadget terms, the ipod has changed the way music is both listened to and bought. It may not have been the first, but it is still the one to beat.

I would have to agree with this - it opened the world of dslr photography up to the masses - how many of us would have spent over £1000 on our first dslr body - especially if we were not sure it was the hobby for us, or those of us who couldn't justify that kind of cost for a hobby?

Well I spent over £1000 on my first DSLR - it was a 10D.

I think generically, it is the affordable DSLR has to be the photography gadget of the decade.

Pre 2000, as far as I know the Nikon D1 was the only mainstream DSLR at lots of money and 2.5 Mpx.

Almost everyone was still shooting film so I don't see how any other modern gadget can beat mainstream, high quality DSLRs

Hyperdrive for me, means I can go away for weeks at a time and not worry about carrying a laptop or running out of storage space.

Hardware, for me it's the Ipod Touch, because I can put everything on there, from music to hyperfocal calculator to audio and video bird (feathered variety ) guides. They're all in one place, very light and accessible for when I'm out 'togging, which isn't that often at the moment.

Software wise, Adobe Lightroom. It really has made multiple batch RAW processing soooo simple :)

It has to be the DSLR I'd have thought? They were about before that but horrendously expensive annd not enough pixels to seriously compete with film. The 10D was the first really viable alternative to film for me but I hung on till the 20D before getting rid of all my film gear.

You could argue a strong case for home printers which have come a long way in the same period, but I think they had to improve drastically to catch up with DSLRs.

Panasonic GF1. Meant i could carry on taking pics when the dSLR became too much to handle.

the DSLR is more of a tool than a gadget because thats what we base photography equipment around, however exception is made for the canon 300D because it was the first consumer DSLR to hit the market and changed the way we do photography.

Hi everyone,

Very new to DSLR so i am going to plump for my electronic e reader, the Sony PRS-505.

I used to take around 10-12 books on holiday before and now i just download them and take the Sony which is about the size of one thin paperback.

Just as well really as my hand luggage will be full of camera equipment from now on!

Best wishes,

Tracey

So did I but on a Nikon D100.

What a waste of money that was. It never gets used now. I could have bought lots of of cameras I actually want with that much money but at the time I thought it was what I wanted.

Steve.

 spotted it on the Gadget Show and the wifes eyes lit up as she's a big reader, orded one from Sony as a pre-order and was delivered on the day of release. She uses it every day.

Well I got to say the iPhone. , the iPod changed the way we listen to music, the iPod took that and added wireless Internet and a phone , brilliant

Good thread question :)

Photography wise, for me it has to be the Nikon D3. Changed the face of sport and editorial photography.

Otherwise it's got to be Satnav. Especially now it's made it OK to admit to being a man and not being able to read a map ;)

Not quite a gadget but high speed wireless internet connection...otherwise I would not be sat in a bar in the Bahamas following this thread....:)
