G20 Summit Next Week

I'm going to go shoot the Put People First march tomorrow (saturday), I don't expect that to get nasty.

Next week though.....well I think the attack on Godwin's house was just the start. I would make sure you know the streets and know which way to run if it turned nasty quickly. I think riots and looting are quite likely personally.

Nah it's with Abbey. :)

Well, as I said, I think calling em up before the interview is the safest bet. But also, all these buisneses are posting info online for workers/visitors about the protests I think, might be worth checking the website...

Though! she might be more likley to get a job if she just marches straight in through the thousands of protesters outside with pitchforks and flaming torches! would be quite an entrance and it would show abbey that she is devoted!

There were protestors on TV today saying they were going to break the law to get their message across. Didn't hear any cops saying they were going to beat anybody up.

You stick to yer stone circles and pagan rites then mate.

Have you seen the remake? Its truly awful, its a contender for worst film of all time!) the only good thing about it is that nic cage gets tortured towards the end (bees, fire etc) shame it was all CGI though:naughty:

Most of the media hype about stringing up bankers, breaking windows etc has come from this guy.

You can take him seriously if you want to, I personally decline to do so ...

hmm, I may have to edit "b£$%hforks..." sowwy mr mod!:D

you say that, ive been shouted at by a bloke like that when I went to photograph the anti-trident renewal protests. but then he turned out to be a nice bloke who makes cider in somerset, he thought I was a police tog, but when he learned that I wasn't he gave me some of his bottled cider brew!

harmless really

hey thats a good tip!!! thanks for that.

The recruiter informed her that anyone who walks in or out might be targetted hence why I'm worried. This should be an interesting day.

hehe looks like the 17-55 will have to do.

there could be the possibility of a back/side enterance! but these protesters can be sneeky

Well quite. The police have this group called FIT who specialise in using photography for intimidation. 'We know where you live, we've got a file on you.' etc. So if you get mistaken for them, hostility, but not violence is quite probable. On the other hand, the police don't want any photos of them beating the crap out of people. Even if those people are soap-dodgers and hence considered sub-human by a reasonable proportion of average punters. So if it kicks off big-time, the main threat to a photographer's safety is violent policemen.

i totally agree!

though I have to admit, I would just possibly consider the job of a police tog looking at the kit they get to use. but then I realise I have a concience! (sorry to any pc plods on here! most of you are nice!)

I live round the corner from the US embassy, lived through many a protest, we have constant armed guard around here and actually they are some of the nicest people ive met. (one spent a good half hour explaining how his h&c machine gun worked etc... they don't actually do anything they appreciate the chat!)

and i have had the chance to speak to a police tog too once (he took pics of me, I took pics of him, he took pics of me, i took pics of him.. this went on etc) in the end we talked, they only keep photos of any "crime" being comited against anything! he then proceded to delete the few hundred pics infront of me just to proove his point!

just goes to show, these people who clash, both happen to be really nice as well as being big meanies:)

It's not like G8, it's not like a standard semi-peaceful anti-war protest, it's potentially very dangerous, so be careful!

Lol. You've obviously not been to many G8 protests.

It's not just anarchists. There is A LOT of stuff going on over the next 7 days.

Well, I'm off Westminster to get some shots of the march today. I think today is the chattering classes taking Rupert out for a jolly good flag wave and maybe a nice dinner afterwards, should be some good shots around parliament still though. Hope the rain stays away.

yes, todays protests are those of middle-class discontent. will be heading up to the end (marble arch/hyde park) seeing I live down the road. hope it doesn't start to rain:(

Those links were really useful - thanks!

Any suggestions for how to identify myself as not being part of the demonstrators and not being a civilian police photographer? I thought of a yellow high-viz jacket with "press" on it but that could make me look like a target. Maybe best to just slink around and keep in the background, and keep my eyes open.

Why would you wear a high-viz jacket with press on it? It would just say to everyone that you arn't press...becuase no press do that.

Jeez - just asking. Calm down.

On a lighter note:

POLICE forces across the UK are looking forward to cracking dozens of middle class skulls this summer, a senior officer said yesterday.

Superintendent Tom Logan said the recession could provoke thousands of law-abiding professionals into violent unrest giving his officers a once in a lifetime chance to get in amongst them with nightsticks.

He added: "Economic downturn means people you would not normally associate with civil unrest taking their anger on to the streets. It's a very special time in a policeman's life.

"A lot of my lads were too young for the poll tax riots and so this could be their only chance to knock the absolute living **** out of a Guardian reader.

Daily Mash

Predictably tame today....just a bunch of people out for a bit of a walk. Some interesting people though. Was embarassing when the guy on stage tried to start a chant.....were more togs than protestors there and he gave up after 30 seconds to barely disguised sniggers from most of us.

You suspect they'd be happy if there was a bit of aggro because then the real issues would disappear....

Now your not saying the government will have bogus rabble rouser's in the crowd to create trouble are you

It's another good day to release bad news situation

Ooh scary anarchists ...

There may be a few idiots, but the worst they're going to be trying to do is a bit of property damage. The media, cops and government are hyping the 'dangerous anarchists' theme for all they're worth to get ordinary people to stay away and not bother them with unwelcome dissent. After all, it's really important to give vast amounts of our money to useless bankers with no evident benefits in return, and the public should wind its neck in and not interfere with the activities of their betters.

Most likely source of physical danger is the cops.

If it kicks off they will want to make sure that they aren't photographed beating up citizens, so they will go after photographers.

Are you really that naive? Anarchists don't give a flying **** who you are or what laws they break - they are anarchists FFS! By their very nature and beliefs they are as likely to attack you as anyone or anything else, they're just common thugs who get their kicks through intimidation by numbers. I'd bet a pound to a pinch of **** they wouldn't be so brave on their own.

I would advise not going anywhere the area unless you really have to. I've given the same advice to employees in our company following a high level threat assesment and liaison with various bodies. Whether you choose to take on board this advice is up to you but this is what I do for a living.

Spot on:thumbs:. Cowards really:razz:

Well, I'm open to being convinced.

Do you have any evidence of any attacks by anarchists on photographers comparable to the evidence of attacks by police on photographers (e.g. the link I posted above)

If you do I'd be quite interested to see it.

An obviously biased report by an obviously left wing journalist is evidence?

admitantly there are those idiots who go and do that kind of thing, but they aren't true anarchists (they are just thugs using it as an excuse). you do get true anarchists on marches, mostly uni students and their professors who tutor them, they don't want to cause trouble (they tend to stay peacefull) but they get surrounded by idiots who decide "hey, we are "anarchists" lets throw rocks!) sad really...

druid, you planing on going?

I'd agree with that. Like most political movement groups there are those that tend to take things to the extreme.

ah, pitty! would of been fun to meet up and get some pics perhaps?

Well, I seriously doubt this will the last major demo of the recession, my guess is that this is just the start of things, so I imagine the opportunity will arise ;)

I've personally witnessed it when rioters have attacked the media. A very quick Google search throws this up:

Link 1

Link 2

Link 3 (photographer killed by rioters)

nice pics mid_gen! im kicking myself because there was a hillarious placard sticking out of the ground saying "down with this sort of thing!". I longed to get a shot, but as I was getting my camera out in the hellish rain and hail, someone decided to do what the placard asked :(
