I'm toying with the idea of getting a smaller camera, mainly for nights out etc. I want to be able to just shove it in my pocket and not have to worry about taking a bag with me.

Obviously the main attraction to the G10 is the ability to shoot RAW and the IXUS is smaller. Has anyone got any experience with these cameras and help me make a decision?
 
Well the ixus is great for what it is and its very small, but the one i had (40) had very little in the way of manual control all you could adjust was the EV. The G9 (never used a G10) is great in that it has raw and manual control - more like a bridge camera, its not too big but might not fit in jeans pockets.
 
Thanks for that, it seems that I am going to have to trade off size or manual modes...
 
If it's purely for nights out etc then i'd go with the Ixus. I just bought my gf an Ixus 860IS and it seems pretty decent so I can personally vouch for that, although I think the 870IS is out now, just depends on how much you want to spend really.
 
I was looking at the 80, cos it's dead cheap! I guess it has that going for it too!

I have an IXUS v2 back in the day when 2MP was bleeding edge, it was a great little camera...
 
Yeah i think the IXUS would be your best bet.

I've got a G7 that i use when im out at gig's, and it's quite bulky, i have a case for it which straps onto my belt.

i think it would be a bit big & uncomfortable to carry about in your pocket all night.
 
Regarding RAW mode, most of the IZUS range & powershot range can be "hacked" :naughty: to allow RAW, plus live histogran, exposure bracketing, etc.
My Powershot A720 IS now has all these features, also did the same to my A620, friend of mine did the business to his IZUS, I find myself taking the 720 out more than the 40D now, particularly when weight/size is a consideration.
The "hack" doesn't actually alter the firmware, a file on the memory card tags the extra features on, when the cards removed the cameras as bought (firmware wise).
