I have the 28-300 as a general purpose walk about lens. In good light used correctly it delivers very good results. But the AF-P might be a better choice if the bias is towards action/wildlife.
This is a test I did when deciding if I was going to keep the 28-300 (it can be viewed larger on flickr)

I'm pretty sure the 70-300 will be the better performer. Reviews I have seen so far are very good. I'm using one on Saturday.

Edit, does the AFP work ok on D700?

Good catch... it's a DX lens with limited compatibility...
The current list of full compatibility is D500, D3300, D3400, D5300, D5500 (w/ latest firmware).

28-300 was batched with the 36mp D8xx series kits so can't be bad.

So had a play with the 70-300 AFP fx this evening and initial impressions are a bit meh!

It's small and light and build is a bit on the average side. With the ridiculous sized hood attached it's longer than my 70-200 F4!

Not tried it in daylight but indoors is was slow and cumbersome to focus. Probably not a lens I would get, but for day time it might be better!

looks like the 28-300mm might be getting purchased unless someone can persuade me the 70-300 af-p is the better option !!

Not on D700 it isn't (well maybe isn't)...

From Ken Rockwell (yes I know but the compatibility information is usually right)...
YES! Everything works great on:
FX: as of July 2017, it works great on the D5, D750, D610 and D600.
DX: as of July 2017, it works great on the D500, D7500, D5600, D5500, D5300, D3400 and D3300, but on DX cameras, just get the 70-300 AFP VR DX instead for half the price if it works on your model.

Mostly works on:
These cameras reset focus to infinity as they wake up. This is only a problem if you want to use a remote timer, expecting the camera to stay focused where you left it, otherwise no problem at all.

FX: D4, D4S, D3, D3X, D3S, Df, D810, D810A, D800 or D800e and D700.
DX: D300, D300S, D7200, D7100, D7000 and D5200.

NO! Useless on:
It won't focus manually or automatically on any of these, making this lens totally useless on them:
Any of the D1 series, any of the D2 series, D200, D100, D90, D80, any of the D70 series, D60, D50, any of the D40 series, D5100, D5000, D3200, D3100 or
D3000 and won't work on any 35mm camera.

Have you considered the Tamron 70-300 (Di VC USD version) instead?

I would buy it used... it goes for about 50% of new in great shape.
It's a "superzoom" and one of those lenses that get replaced in the hopes of becoming a better photographer... ;)

I'm not taking the 70-300 AFP with me this weekend and sticking with the 70-200 F4 as its the better lens. The 28-300 would make a good all round walk about solution though.

Hi Dave
nothing wrong with your 5 pics of the gosshawk

i have the holy trinity 17-35 24-70 70-200 all nikon 2.8
but its a pain having to swap lens" when something pops up in front of you
so thats why I'm looking for an all round lens to pop on the d750
but don't want to waste my cash on the wrong lens
as long as the iq is acceptable

I remember some time ago when at a show put on by Andy Rouse, the days he was paid by Nikon, he had a lot of praise for the 28-300...in the end I hung out for the 24-120f4 and 80-400 G..

All my gear has a limitation - whether it's Nikon FX/DX, Pentax or Mamiya - me! :(
