Hi,

I am taking first steps to FX from DX, I was looking at the end of November spending cash out on an D810 after the new release is out. Thing is do i or should i really be bothered, instead buy a D3s with better FX glass and upgrade later in the year or beginning of next year? I dont have GAS, and i am in no hurry to have the best of the best, i am trying to learn to be a better photographer before i get a great camera and spend a lot of money.

Do question is £1000 FX camera second hand i see D3s D700 D610 obviously D810 is i think to much until i am ready. Of those 3 which would you say is better? I know hte D700 is single slot which is a bit of a downer for protection at shoots but if its ok then what would you guys advise? I see the D3s is £700-1000 dependent on actuation's etc,

Appreciate your time, just dont want to spend unecessary cash.

What is it you're wanting to gain from FX and what do you have currently?

The D3s is the best but its not that simple. You would probably sell it in a week for being too big and heavy for yourself

I have a d90 now and am going into small business but am wanting to get an fx to mess with until first event in April, I will be doing fashion/events/ dance, trying to avoid weddings but I think it will happen also. Once I am happy with my shoots I will get a better camera, but for time being I want glass, so an older fx is fine for me, presume D610 or D3s due to double card slots etc. Was going to get D810 as I say but no point in spending 2k when it's not needed yet, can get some fx glass for half that

Nikon might be announcing the d810 replacement tomorrow. Once the d820 or whatever is on the market all the pros will flood the used market with d810`s. it will lower the price and get much better deals on a d810

Yep, I'd expect a number of used D810's coming up. However, it'll probably be another month or two before the D820 hits the market and then there'll be a backlog.

OP is a used D750 out of budget?

Ah ok, forgot about that, may see what D810 cost looks like after then also, i know i still got to Choose D3s or D610 though, as i want to get out next week at least shooting in studio environment. Main cost camera can wait longer while i get glass and cheap FX thats all.

The problem is going from DX glass to FX for starters, i mean that D610 and D3s will take the same shots as a D750 pretty much, the difference is the quality of glass and my skills at getting the best out of the camera. A simple Black and White pic in any of these camera's will be the same, the difference for me is costing out glass vs quality. I could get a D750 or D810 but then will have to wait up for glass collection to increase if you get my point. I want and am able to generate via work part time the cost of the newer camera, but not having the framing of FX is making my shots not stand out from any other tom, dick or harry.

My idea was Stick low, get out a 700-1000 camera, generate enough income after to purchase the newer D810, i want to invest in the business and glass before. No point getting a D810 or D750 and find out that i need more studio equipment and better glass. I am not taking out any business loans to payout on mass till i get my market established. Its just a waste of cash otherwise. I am not interested in Video at all as i have a G7 and GH4 for that if needed. So its just stills, and no nature or Motorsport etc.,.fastest pics will be Dance related at present.

Do D610 or D3s seem sensible at £700 and £1099 respectively at present.

The D610 will give you the same results as the D750 as sensor performance is pretty much identical. The biggest drawback of the D610 is the small AF spread. £1099 won't buy you the best condition D3s but if condition doesn't matter then it could be a good choice if you're happy to carry such a heavy body. If you're wanting to do fashion and dance I'd still opt for the D750 over the D610 due to the better AF performance, especially in difficult lighting. You can get new grey for £1155 if you're happy to buy grey. If not, and it's just to tide you over then a used D610 that you're not going to lose much on is a good option.

Ok, So i been reviewing this exact question, D750 vs D800 vs D610. Its in the eye of the beholder. Checked on Ebay D750 and they are starting from £750, so i think wait till the release dates come out from Nikon for D810 replacement to see their price and see if the D750 drops also, Def think D750 after seeing the review of low light capability and its £750-£899 ebay price. it is lighter, newer functions, low light is good, so dance/events will be a bit easier, also lighter, smaller raw picture sizes may help with work flow over the D800's 36mb files. Its still a hard decision tbh, However the D750 does tend to look on the books better for my types of work at this time. I think after my studio is sorted that i will invest in a body like the D810/replacement but once the business is paying for it. Will see in coming week what is bought. Fingers twitching already.

if I was going to buy a new D750 which I would prefer over a S/H one to save a couple hundred quid, i would look at Panamoz.

I had a D600 as my first foray into FX a couple of years ago. When coming from a crop sensor (D7100) the difference in low-light shooting blew me away,

I now use a D500 and a D3S, which I bought as my second camera a couple of months ago, for my football photography.

I much prefer the D3S to my D500 and also compared to my old D600, it wins. It is heavy, but I don't mind that.

It might be a 10 year old camera but I love it. So much so, that I am considering getting rid of my D500 for a D3S or D4.

Then again the AF system on the D500 is why it's still in my possession! :)

So, I recommend a D3S (y)
