Further afield city break options?

Most resources I've found cover European cities or the other obvious ones (London, New York), but if you had a week to go somewhere alone in January or February, £1k budget for flight/hotels (absolute max) and had no concerns about length of flight, where would you go?

£1k is getting me an awful lot further than expected in late January, so it's opened my mind to options I've not even considered (as examples, 4 nights in Hong Kong or Tokyo in fairly decent hotels in good locations with direct flights are do-able).

I've done San Francisco, LA, Vegas, New York, Boston, Toronto and most of mainland Europe that interests me, and Scandanavia/Iceland are strictly off limits as my wife is Norwegian so wants to explore those places with me and our son when he gets a bit older.

An asian city is particularly appealing but I'm also open to any photo experience/tours that can be done for less than £1k (that don't involve boats).

Given the topic of this place you may need to avoid many of the asian cities unless you do not suffer from GAS otherwise your budget may not work ;)

Know it is not far afield but have you done much of Ireland?
How about S Africa?

Moscow? Not as silly as it sounds! If you go, give yourself time to sort the visa out, it can take a while!

hong kong

Or closer to home, i did a weekend in Istanbul not long ago and loved it to bits.

Marrakech is a photographers dream, cheap too - you wouldn't need all your budget too.

If you haven't been to NYC you should, it's fab, as is Tokyo - both equally amazing for photography.

I tend to think that going any further really deserves a lot longer than a few days.

edit: just read your post properly, you've been to NYC.

Of all Asian cities I think Hanoi is probably my fave, I'd love to go back.

Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Might be a bit of a known quantity but I like Bruges.

I'd fancy Moscow but massively put off by a GF of mine suffering awful racism there, apparently on the rise.

The Moscow police were on a money making scheme last time I was there.

Ask to see passport, find problem, 10 US$ discretely passed, problem disappeared.

St Petersburg is a much nicer city.

Cairo is always interesting, Istanbul similar but toned down. My first choice would be Cairo, then hop on a train to Luxor for a couple of days (or sail down the Nile and camp on the banks, which I did last time). Second, Istanbul to Izmir via Gallipoli, then train back to Istanbul.

If you had 2 weeks, cheap flight to Vic Falls, then road trip to Chobe and Okovango.

All of those I've done for less than a grand.

Thanks guys, sorry I missed the responses to this.

I've done NYC 9 times, would still love to go again but desperately trying to do something new instead! I've been looking at Iceland, out of season (and super cheap as a result, less than £450 for 5 days) so would have loads left over for tours etc whilst there, but it would be a massive risk with regards to getting vaguely agreeable weather.

I'm struggling to shake off Hong Kong to be honest, lots of guaranteed photo opportunities and 5 days comes in nicely at £750 with a pretty decent hotel, which is a lot cheaper than I was expecting.

Hong Kong would be the winner for me

Spent 2 1/2 years there

That's a no brainier! Zanzibar and either stay in Stone Town for the week or split it between there and the east coast.
