I had to come somewhere to vent my anger. Ive purchased 2 lenses today from Fixation that arrived today, came home like a little school kid and opened them up, slid ithe 80-200 afs onto camera........... fingers down a chalk board is all that could be said to describe the noise coming out of it!
blood started to boil, so i popped the 28-70 2.8 on to calm myself down and be in awe of what an amazing lens it is............ EVEN WORSE fingers down a chalk board!!!!

Now, im no expert but all you had to do was turn the focus ring on the 80-200 and you can hear its garbage! the 28-70 only makes the noise on AF not when you manually turn the ring.
So much for them getting checked out in the workshop...

Im not slagging the company off to high heaven as they have not had a chance to defend themselves. (i think its a good job i get time too calm down before speaking to them. However, I think its pretty pants service to send these bunk lenses out.

The 80-200 also came with no lens hood or tripod collar (not mentioned during the sale) So im not a happy bunny thisevening! Worst part is I just sent my Sigma 70-200 off for a service so when these get sent back ill have nothing!!! grrrrrg!

rant over!

No wonder you're annoyed, I'd be the same.

What condition was the box / packaging the lenses was shipped in ? As Mark says they could have been damaged in transit. I hope Fixation get this sorted out smoothly.

If the box was marked "Fragile", then unfortunately due to poor education and the inability to read, many couriers read that as "Football".

With both dead on arrival - I'd suspect it was down to the courier, rather than Fixation - but guess wait and see, although it'll be a bit of a hassle getting them back, and deciding what you want to do next... Good luck :)

Even if they were bust to start with no retailer tests product before they send it..

Take a few deep breaths (going off with both bores won't do you any favours) and contact the seller. Annoying but not the end of the world, it'll probably get resolved quickly.

(Presumably they're just not loud af lenses? I've never used either so can't comment)

This.

If both lenses are suffering the same you can be reasonably sure it is for the same reason - i.e. a drop of the box they were in...

Was the outer carton damaged in any way? Couriers drop kick and stamp on anything marked fragile so anything you send needs to assume poor treatment to survive intact. Talk to fixation and tell them both lenses are knackered and ask when are they going to pick them up and either refund you or send replacements via another courier.

Best save any shouting for if they're unhelpful :)

spoken to them thismorning, sounded very apologetic and ups to come and pick them up on monday. fustrating more than anything, The outer box was in pretty good nick and they were very well packaged, shame really that those 2 lenses are destined for the graveyard. the 28-70 is in immaculate optical cond! really impressed till i autofocused! haha

I was sat outside a certain fast food chain (Cough..Macd.... Cough cough!) a few days ago when a courier arrived As it happens he parked right by my seat so I had a grandstand view as he opened the side door and climbed over the parcels to get to the one he wanted, I couldn't believe it, he was crushing some flat!, He even knocked a few out the door of the van in the process. As he went past I couldn't resist saying 'fragile?' he just glared at me, couldn't care less about his stuff.
No wonder so much of what we get is 'damaged in transit'.

That is the risk with mail order. Even when I buy lenses through ebay I only buy if I can collect. New lenses I buy from an indy shop in Chelmsford. On the other hand I have probably paid out hundreds of pounds more than I needed to. I hope you get it sorted.

A TNT driver delivered to my works a few years back, got into the back of the lorry and was throwing boxes of laptops left right and centre trying to find my parcel - when I commented on the damage he would be doing, his reply was "they're insured ain't they".

To the tune of £250 million last payed out last year by the insurance companies,
i wonder who picking up that tab :(

ill video them if i get time tonight. One of them does it REALLY loud when autofocusing and feels really smooth/silent when turning the manual focus ring, the other feels/sounds like your turning a rusty screw when turning manual focus ring and makes the sound a little less pronounced but does it on both auto and manual focus.

Did anyone see that dispatched program on parcel couriers about 3 weeks ago?! It certainly explains a few things and backs up everything anyone has said in this post. There caught on undercover camera going "this is how you handle fragile goods" and dropkicking them over the warehouse!

Maybe the solution is cctv in back of vans and in warehouses etc. Tell the staff that they are being filmed and I bet they start treating the parcels a bit better!

Wow, thought it was sorted, sent the lenses back to the shop, got a full refund.

Found another 80-200 advertised as ex+ condition from MPB, spoke to the sales woman who went to check the lens out, said its in excellent condition only just a slight bit of wear on the outside, no dust/dints all gravy, 6 months warranty for £550.

Well, arrives today................... Im loosing the will to live here. Its WORSE THAN THE LAST TWO!!! It sounds like a lazer gun when auto focusing!

http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10152936883545523

not sure if anyone can see this but here is a link to a video i made, now, HOW can they say that that has been checked before sending out. I know that delivery companies are sh** but the box was in pretty pristine condition so didnt appear to have been abused too hard.

Rant over!

Now ive just lost all faith that there is actually any good copies of the 80-200 af-s out there.

P.S the cheek of the woman from MPB telling me that the 80-200 can be quite loud lenses and maybe i should think of getting something a little newer if thats not what im after!

Doesn't sound good!

Have all 3 lenses made the same noise? If so, I would suspect the body rather than the lenses...

Oh dear! I can't see the body causing this, that hissing sounds electronic, almost like the squeal of a motor under high load and the speed controller having a bad time. Very poor show! Get your money back and go somewhere else bud. Twice is bad enough, 3 times leaves no room for excuses!

yikes...thats a bad bad noise. like fingernails on a chalkboard.

good luck with getting it sorted

are you sure its just not a noisy lens? has anyone else got one they can comment on?

edit - just seen the video

You'd think they'd test the damn things before sending them out.....

show me any retailer that does. its counter productive when 99% of products are going to be fine. all it would do is push staff costs and then product prices up. also theyre never going to be able to test for all issues across all scenarios etc, where do you draw the line?

Just seen the vid. lol

Better luck next time.

But the 3 lens are from 2 different suppliers... Are you absolutely sure its nothing to do with the contacts between camera and lens. Perhaps the power is not fully getting though and the focus motor is struggling as a result?

Just a thought

This isn't just your local Tesco, PC world, etc..... When it comes to a business that specialises in one market and in the retail of used goods, you'd expect them to have some sort of quality control system in place.

I don't know who they are, but from what i've read it sounds like a couple of people running a glammed up online garage sale.

yes that is true, you are correct there. MPB are a little different to normal sellers.

who, which one of the two sellers the OP has used? MPB? if so, you're wrong as they've been more than professional both times I've used them (I cant speak for Fixation, ive never used them).

as the OP has used two different suppliers now Id be considering a fault with the body.

You have had three different lenses from two different suppliers, all being faulty?

You are either very unlucky or have a suspect body.

MPB are far from a "Glammed up online garage sale" for the record, they have an excellent reputation, assuming that the stating this has never dealt with MPB, perhaps they would be advised to roll their necks in.

I have spent a lot of money on lenses with MPB over the last couple of years, and to be fair when they arrived they were as per web description, plus they offer warranty, which surely shows they must be checked prior to dispatch.

yikes didnt see all these responses. ive tried all 3 lenses with both my new d700 body and my d300 body. the AF Also gets stuck on the new 80-200 anf you have to twist the manual focus ring to "near" focus to get it to focus again. the new 80-200 is from MPB, the 1st set of lenses were from fixation. all have had different faults.

Fixation 80-200 - AF fine, manual focus ring felt/sounded like grinding 2 bits of metal together. very stiff and loud.

Fixation 28-70 Mf fine, AF sounded like the MPB 80-200

MPB 80-200 uf youve watched the vid youve heard it. but also if it doesnt find focus it goes to one extreme and gets stuck there untill you turn MF ring.

I would say all the customer service reps have been helpfull and never quibbled getting them returned asap but really doesnt excuse all this. Its now left me lenseless for 2 weekends work!!!!

Gutted i sent my sigma 70-200 off to sigma when i ordered the first batch of lenses. but hindsights a bit**

Sigma's without HSM are quite loud (my 170-500 sounds like coffee grinder) however they don't normally sound like that - send it back.

That said it migt be worth trying it on another body (maybe theres a TP member close by who could help you out? ) because three lenses from two suppliers all being faulty does push the bounds of probability

Ref the comments from Lyonspride - both MPB and Fixation are highly reputatable companies (I've bought loads of stuff from both without a hitch) , as fracster said if you've not actually used them , don't talk about what you don't understand

oh there not sigma lenses. there the nikon versions. ive been trying to upgrade from my sigma 70-200. when i got the first 2 lenses i sent the sigma back off to sigma as they recently replaced the HSM and left a massive fiber on the front focus element. (seriously do i have any luck?!)

i have used other lenses with the d900 no problems. When the lenses were sent back to fixation the technicians report did say they were broken as he stated the cost of repiring them wasnt an option for
them ( they were comission sales)

ahh well, itll make it all that much sweeter when i find a good copy!!!
just sucks that ive lost out money wise due to not having the lenses.
no win no fee!!!

Just for information, I've been using an 80-200 for a couple of years now on a D300 body and its as quiet as a mouse....(now ain't that the kiss of death!)

Chris

Ive only used Fixation once, and was more than happy. Very quick turn around time for a repair job, although the returned packaging could have been packaged better!

So....... what did i do in a previous life?!?!?!

If you read back through the tread ive had SH***Y luck with these lenses.
Finally, i thought this will come to an end! Spoke to MPB after the last one and they sent out another they had in stock.
The rep tried to get me to pay the extra £50 initially but then as i pointed out it would be a nice gesture to offer it at the same price.

BRILLIANT!

So its been delivered today.........................

Hmmmmmmmm........ looks like a 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-D PUSH PULL ZOOM to me?!?!?!

Thats because it is!!!!! They have sent me the wrong lens!!!!!!

WHAHAAAAAAAAT HAVE I DONE WRONG IN LIFE!

im now 1 month down the road from the initial purchase!!!! they cant even send the right lens to me!!!

i literally just laughed, i cant get any more angry at the situation, but its just a joke now.

Anyone know anything like it?!

can someone on the forum just sell their 80-200 af-s and 28-70 af-s so that i dont have to deal with these chumps!

I know its not what you want, but the push-pull version is a good lens. Not worth near what you paid though.

As for the noise on your video, that's about the worst I've heard from a lens. The worst I've had was a tamron that had a bit of a juttery sound when focusing, but it worked fine and I learned to ignore it. But I doubt you could ignore that!! It would scare birds a kilometer away!

im sure the push pull is a lovely lens. and this is a pristine copy but its not what i purchased!
I baught the af-s as i shoot mainly sport but cant afford the vr1 so its not a lot of good for me!

i guess its not meant for me to ever own a working 80-200!!!!
