Fungus?

It appears that my once lovely Nikkor ED 80-200mm f2.8 may have some fungus growing inside. My biggest concern is whether it will get worse and the best way to stop that happening. Any tips out there? I guess the obvious well ventilated non-dark environment is my best bet, but I'm keen to hear if there's anything else I can do presuming what's already there can't be shifted?

Here's a pic to show it's current state, it's not my greatest ever photograph admittedly, but hopefully gives you an idea of how bad it is...

Image quality appears unaffected currently. I was contemplating selling the lens - before I realised it had this growth - but I'm guessing it's value has now plummeted so I'm probably better off keeping hold of it.

Any help/advice or just general - "oh dear" messages appreciated.

Only 3 "oh dears"? Guess it's not as bad as I thought!

if you intend to sell it just stick it on ebay with accurate description and pics as it is
you'll be surprised by how much it will make
you could send it off and get it professionally cleaned or you could strip it and clean it yourself
plenty of info on how to do it on google

You might be able to get it cleaned but depending on the extent and severity, it might leave marks on the lens coating. Best bet would be to contact someone like Miles Whitehead and ask for a quote. I'm posting from my phone but if you search in the film section you should get his contact details.

you should always keep a silica gel pack or two in your lens and camera bag

read somewhere that UV light will kill it

will research...........................:exit:

Sorry to drag this thread up from the dead, but I just wanted to say thanks for recommending sending the lens to Miles to be cleaned. I received it back from him yesterday and I'm properly chuffed with the results, the fungus has cleaned off perfectly and the lens looks almost new! He's also a thoroughly nice chap to boot and his services are very reasonably priced. Result :)

No apology required, it's nice to read results after such a post. Thank you.

You are right, which means that getting some regular sunshine through your lens is the best prevention. Leave them on a window sill for a while if not using them. Fungus also needs a tiny amount of moisture, so keep them in a case with a dessicant, you can get things you dry in the oven on Evilbay.
