Funding for a distance learning course

Hello everyone!

Not sure if this is th right place to post this but I could do with some advise on the above.

I really want to do a Dipolma in Photography but I work full time therefore I have to do it as a distance learning course.

I have found a course that looks great the only problem being that it's 500 pounds! Which I just don't have to shell out.

I've been searching the net for any help with funding but because I do work full time (and need to in order to run my house) I can't get any help from government scheme etc.

I was wondering if anyone here had received any help or have any ideas about other places I could try and get some help towards my fees.

Can you not do a similar course at evening classes?

I just ask because I looked at one last night... Think it was an NCFE Digital Photography and it was £105. I have nothing to compare it to as I haven't looked at the online courses however. I think it would be worth looking at what you are getting for the money, and what you can get elsewhere. Evening classes would also offer a "pay by installment" plan.

I'm not saying don't go for the online course in any way, or saying you haven't explored the options already. It just might be worth shopping around?

EDIT. damn my tiredness :bonk: I've just read that you work full time and have a family. Doesn't leave much time for evening classes. Sorry
 
I would look at evening courses at colleges, they are usually cheaper.
Another thing to take into account is do you want a recognised qualification ?. For say progression in study etc. As a lot of the courses available today are not, night school ones usually are and are probably. City & Guilds, GCSE, A level, AS Level, NCFE, NOCN, OCN.

I would also say talk to someone who is on the course / done the course if possible, and see what they have to say about it.

If you don't mind me asking which company did you do your course with? How did you find the course? I'll PM you if thats okay?

JMO - I did try looking at my local college and Uni as my first port of call, unfortunately the only one they provide is an A-level which is 2 years and classed as full time as it's 17 hours a week, so not possible to hold down a job with.
They do offer an evening course which is 10 weeks of one night at week that will course £99 and there is no qualification at the end.:shrug:

MHO - Thanks. I was concerned about obtaining a recognised qualifcation out of it, hence I actually can't do my local college courses as explained above.
I certainly would like to chat with anyone that has done the course I woud like to.

Thanks a lot for posting the link. I had seen the Open Uni courses as I have a friend doing a degree with them at the moment and she said that they were great.

The course that was mentioned in the link only goes towards a qualification if you decided to do more so it's not a qualification in it's own right - well I think! I could have read it wrong I've been traweling the internet so long now I'm seeing the same sites over!:thinking:

So I'm still not sure what to do!

Does your employer offer any assistance?

I know my company would pay upto £100 per year to cover fees, books etc for any course that will get me a recognised qualification whether it is related to my job or not.

The company benefits as you gain transferable skills (e.g. communication, computer, people etc) and they get tax benefits for doing this - I believe it is 100% deductable against tax so it is cost neutral for the company.

They may be more likely if they have the "Investor In People" award.

Mine ave investor in ppl award, but no such luck for me... depends how big the company is I suppose....
