I happened to take this picture at the weekend:

s

After all day shooting polo action, it was a shot I had planned to finish off my coverage, and was set up with a 24-105 with a polariser to see through the glass effectively, plus some thought on positioning (driver's side, down the road a bit to get some long shots then the close-up).

Once I realised she wasn't wearing a seat belt, I got on the case to get the shot out to the newspapers as fast as pos. I sent this shot plus a couple of longer shots out to the UK nationals, along with a nice descriptive caption. The Daily Mail published it on Monday - a nice half page with details about how the Queen couldn't be prosecuted for driving without a seatbelt etc etc. with my caption info making up the main part of the story (though I later realised it was a Daimler not a Jaguar).

The story was then picked up and started going around the world. Big Pictures had a couple of shots as well, one of which the Daily Mail used on their web site here along with another of mine.

Things started to get interesting as the story hit the blogs. A Google on Monday afternoon showed hundreds of entries, including numerous like this one from the Bucharest Herald who stole and de-watermarked my shot from the Dail Mail web site. There were lots of hits from India, as well as really obscure stuff like the Himalayan Times.

Then the phone started ringing and I had a nice discussion with a Hong Kong agency who, rather than stealing the picture like the Bucharest Herald et al, offered to pay for it which I gladly helped them to do.

Unfortunately, Getty weren't interested in taking the single close-up shot which was a bit of a shame, as I think their distribution would have worked really well and got a good wadge of cash in.

It's been really interesting to see how a single picture that triggers an article can go viral like this. I'm fairly realistic about being able to obtain any money from Romania, Nepal and Columbia, and just dont have the resources to chase this up. Lesson for next time - get one of the bigger agencies involved earlier and let them do the hard work of distribution and chasing the money.

The money I will get in should keep me in beers for a few months though...

Cheers!

Amazing!! Well done

Nice one...you where there shooting polo.... and the lesson of the day is... stay alert and ready to shoot :)

Get a lawyer on a no-win no-fee basis to claim the monies back from all the other newspapers. I am sure some1 would take you up on the offer (and take 50% or whatever was recovered).

Nice pic too :)

It's amazing what non-stories constitute news these days, it must have been a slow day for this to go global.

So did you put the picture out through focus images? who are a foreign agency right? or do you work for them?
find all of the outlets that used it and get focus images to bill them.
Also make sure you save all the cuttings

Can i just get this straight - that is the queen driving her own car!? I didn't know she did that! Great story by the way :) Well done!

Haha fantastic, nice one.
Wonder of the internet!

Interesting story - I wonder if she has an exemption certificate so she does not have to wear a seatbelt ! It is possible to get them.

Nah, she doesnt need an exemption certificate. As far as I understand law, the law broken by Her Maj would be prosectued by CPS (the Crown Prosecution Service) and as she is the head of state she would effectivley be prosecuting herself - therefore she would be exempt (why would she take herself to court, in fact I dont think that would be legally possible!!)

**dammit just read the Mail link.....at least I was right though!!

Anyhoo, back on topic, great picture and great story!! Just out of morbid curisoity, what sort of money does a picture like this earn? Are we talking hundreds or thousands?

Also, as a lesson for others, if one should capture an image such as this what is the best way to get it seen??

Regards

Neil

Try Rex. They're the same company now, but as their own entity they have a pretty big reach and I think they are currently still buying separately. You're out of the peak of the use of it now, but a few monthlies are likely to want it still so it makes sense to get it out there.

Also - you might as well send an invoice to all the places that have used it. Chasing them might prove rather difficult, but if one or two volunteer to pay for it then it was worth doing.

Great capture and we would all be interested in how much cash you made from this photo

Ill tell you how much I get from the Mail when I find out. Should be 3-4 weeks.

I'm assuming she was driving inside a private estate as I can't ever imagine her maj pulling up next to me in the traffoc on the M25..............do you have any other images from this set to prove that this is indeed the queen as the angle from which this shot is taken, it could be anyone who just happened to look like her maj.

Not surprised the Daily Mail picked this up though - what was the headline? "Immigrant seen driving illegally"?! :D

EDIT: Just looked at the article on the Mail (had to bring myself to reading that c**p) and it is indeed the Queen!

Superb!

Nice spot that man! And excellent publicity for your website!

Anyone else think we might not hear from Tobers again.... except screams around the Tower of London?!

Yep - no knighthood for me.

Top work, thats a real one off photo opp there... I hope it pays out for you in the end :)

Not quite a one off - saw a very similar shot on a birthday card in Smiths yesterday.
