What two whole numbers, neither of which contain a zero, when multiplied together equal exactly 1,000,000,000?
 
1,000,000,000 = 10^9

So the answer is 2^9 and 5^9.

Next.....
 
2^9 * 5^9 = 10^18

2*5^8 = 10^9

Up too long today with the grandchildren I was thinking of powers of 10 i.e 5^9 = 5000000000 :bang:

yep.. took the "maths graduate guy" about all of lunchtime today...
 
suvv.. 2^9 x 5^9 = 10^9

2^9 = 512
5^9 = 1953125

interestingly though it does also work for 10^18...

2^18 and 5^18


5^8 has a zero and also 2 x it is not 1,000,000,000

I could make a joke about the quality of university courses these days... But in fairness to 'maths graduate guy' it's perfectly possible to get a maths degree without having any real familiarity with numbers. I did 3 years of probability and statistics courses without actually encountering any real live probabilities or statistics; number theory without any numbers; and computational mathematics without a computer.
 
I cheated for the answer and was surprised.

Fun and Maths in a thread title was frightening enough, but to learn there were two of them! :eek:
 
I thought the actual (logical) answer would be as above, but thought Lynton's answer would be something trick questioney :p

A bit like a couple of people we have employed in the past. Both had electronic engineering degrees but didn't have a clue about anything electronic.

Reminds me of someone who used to be an accountant's PA until they discovered that the 2/1 at university referred more to the number of terms and weeks the person had attended at university rather than the quality of the degree achieved...

It really is simple when you apply logic...

I once remember many many moons ago our maths teacher asking us what is now the age old...

Sum of "1+2+3+4+...998+999+1000"

Really pee'd him off when i solved it in about 2 mins!
