Can anybody tell me if you are able to buy a fully manual digital camera? Having looked on various websites I am very confused! It seems that you can't get a digital camera which enables you to alter the shutter speed. Is that right?

I don't think that there is such a thing as a fully manual digital camera. On the other hand every single DSLR and a few of the decent compacts will allow you to change to shutter priority or aperture priority or program auto and indeed full manual, all of which will allow you to alter shutter speed.

Pretty sure that All digital SLRs have a manual mode and most Hybrids do also!

If you are talking about Digital slr cameras' then they all allow you full manual control if you use the "manual" or "shutter control" (aka TV on a canon) setting. As far as I know most if not all "bridge" cameras' also have a "manual" mode, though I have no idea bout compact digicams.

Thanks for that. It sort of makes sense. My husband has been looking at these having used manual cameras for a long time. He is now looking to get into the 21st century so I thought I might get him a digital camera for Christmas. Web sites can be so confusing if you are not that techie and have very limited photography skills like myself.

I guess a few guys on here could point you in a good direction of a digital camera, if you have a price range?

I would make the point that how things feel in the hand is important - a surprise camera might not be the gift that you think it is.

If you are looking at the digital equivalent of an SLR (these are the cameras whcih allow you to change lenses) then there are a lot of issues to consider. If you are looking at a bridge camera or a compact then things are easier. Or at least there are fewer complexities

The manual camera my husband has is a contax, and he has various lenses which he uses. He has in the past done his own developing and printing in black and white, and knows his way around cameras.

I guess what I am looking for is not a camera for the beginer, but something that he could use to good effect and get decent pictures from.

Any ideas?

How much do you want to spend

I would assume you mean a compact digital camera?

OK, so you are talking DSLR. Prices from £300 upwards. I would strongly recommend that you don't just buy him one - he needs to see which one suits him.

Basically any DSLR will give good results but the choice of lenses and the 'feel' makes a big difference. I would take him into a few shops and let him play. Look at Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus. He can probably get an adapter that would allow him to use his old lenses (in manual mode only) on a new camera.

Thank you so much for the advice. It is especially interesting around the fact that he might be able to use his existing lenses.
Sounds to me like a good excuse for a shopping trip! Will let you know how we get on.
