Starting at the wide end, and stopping at say, 500mm, what lenses are available (brand new), as the best glass in class, covering as much of the range as possible?

For example I know of these lenses:

Nikon 14 to 24mm f2.8 (wide) £1200 ish

Nikon 50mm f1.4 £170ish

Nikon 70 to 200 vr, £1100 ish...

And thats about it, anyone care to complete the entire set? Would be interested in Canon too!

Gandhi - LOL at £8 for delivery. I haven't included anything like the Canon 15mm 2.8 FE or the 100mm 2.8 Macro or any TCs and it still beats the Nikon for total cost. lol

Toothie - Of course I need 11 Canon 1Ds MkIII to full utilize the lenses :) and then 11x 580 EX II so I will have a flash for very body .............. the list goes on and on lol

Yup. Add to that, two D3's a shed load of cards, many Lee filters, a nice tripod, multiple bags and flashes, and you can say good bye to a cool £21-22K :D

I haven't included any serious primes in there either. Just the more esoteric prime lenses like the Defocus control and the Fisheye.

You could probably go through every length of prime and pick a sample from the last 50 years that would be excellent. E.g the 1970's 135 f3.5 gauss design is supposed to be amazing. along with even odder lenses like the f1.0 noct and such like. Pinnacles of design at their time and made in very small quantities so hugely expensive now for what you get.

Oh yeah, sorry canon owners you can't do that can you cos they shafted y'all with the lens mount thing ;)

Anybody noticed that unlike most hobbies or interests you dont need that big a lottery win to get the absolute best of photography equipment,add a 1DS mk 3 to the above and you have stunning quality for £25K

sir should also consider

canon 200mm f1.8 L best 200mm - ever ...

canon 400mm f5.6 L (big is not always better unless you really want to carry the 6Kg 400mm f2.8 in a field with a tripod...)

sigma 120-300mm f2.8 (canon fit, can take photos that no other lens can)
 
The real cost of maintaining a top-end line up of pro glass seems to work out about the same as smoking 20-30 a day. By that standard tons of people can afford it!

Yup but you have to amortize that 14k over the lifetime of the lenses, or at least amortize the depreciation until the next great thing comes out. Say you buy the 24-70 2.8 now for 1k and sell it in good condition in 5 years for 400'ish when the 24-70 VR comes out, it's only costing you 120/year. (Of course I should factor in the cost of money but that's hard work!)

5D with the following lenses
17-40/16-35
50 1.4
85 1.2

40d
10-22
15mm fisheye

Then these lenses
70-200
100mm Macro
24-70

Then perhaps a superzoom or a prime telephoto.
I'd be pretty happy with that.

I would have thought the new 200mm L f2.0 in there as well, just to get over the 20K mark
 
Whiteflyer - the 200mm 2.0 L should probably be in that range but personally I didn't see any need to include it as I wouldn't need it for any uses.

On another note - a supplier got the 800mm 5.6 L in from the Canon rep and from his initial look and play with it, it would seem heavier and longer than the current 600mm 4.0 L. Which kinda defeats the purpose I feel.

That little list included 8 Canon primes but only 5 Nikon. Apples and apples and all that!

Personally I have a few odd lenses that I need to sort out but not quite yet.

I've got a Sigma 15-30mm that I'm not using much but I like it when I do :cuckoo:

The 24-105mm is great for the studio stuff but I could really use an f2.8 so I might be looking for a 24-70 f2.8, but then if I get that will I still want the 24-105? mmmmmmm :thinking:

Then I have two 70-210mm I have the Canon f4 non IS and the Sigma f2.8. I was unsure of the weight of the Canon f2.8. If (and it's a big if) my photography goes the way I hope it might I may have to sell both the 70-210 and get that damned f2.8IS. Empty pockets time again :'(

there is prob a few wrong, but i covered most of ghandis list, i swapped the 105 f2 for the mpe 65, i assume the 105 was for macro:thumbs:

you will also notice i put the 85l instead of the f2 macro, and added a 50L as well
 
With all this fancy glass being listed, what would you choose from both Canon and Nikons range if you could have 3 lens

I'm a canon man, so I would have
24-70mm f2.8L
70-200mm IS f2.8L
14mm f2.8L II

What about adding the Canon 600 F4L IS currently on Calumets site Clickity Click at a cool £5. 499. wait for it and 99 pence. That extra 99 pence must stop them from going bankrupt:shrug:.

Sounds like a visit to a mortgage lender in in order for all the lens listed in this thread. You getting them all at once Gary ?:lol:
