Yes
I know I should be able to work this out but my head's freezing...

If I have a 6 foot tall person and want to shoot full length on a full frame (35mm) camera on a 105mm lens......how far away do I have to be?

Portrait or Landscape?;)

I haven't got a scientific calc with me but the angle of view of a 105mm lens on 35mm is 19deg long edge, 13 deg short edge, give or take.

Through the simple application of trigonometry it should be easy enough to work out the adjacent from the angle and the opposite.

209 inches, ish.

Here's a thread on the matter! Well the other way around, but you get the point! :)

From this thread I make it 279 inches

I can never remember equations but reading that thread I would think about it as

the ratio of focal length to sensor size = .75 x the ratio of distance to object size

Your sensor is 36mm at the long side so with a 105mm lens...

105/36 = .75 x D/S where D is the distance and S is the size

that means that the distance is 3.88 times the size of the subject, in your case a dimunitive 72inches, 72x3.88 = 279.36.

:geek:

I went for frame filling rather than 75%;)

sorry if this is a dumb question (newb here), but why would you want to know? cant you just walk back / forward looking through the viewfinder to see if the person fits?

im guessing you would want to know for if you were tight for space and wondered if you should use a different lens, or a school exam type question to see if you understand the theory?

Using a 35mm lens on a full frame camera the aov is horizontal 54.43. Vertical 37.85. And diagnol 63.44

OOp`s sorry ,I read your post incorrectly. 100mm horizontal is 20.41 Vertical 13.69. diagnol 24.41.

Kind of.

I need to shoot some dresses for a client. Model is likely to be 5'8" + and since the client is leaving shoes to the model will probably turn up in 4" +.

I'm looking at rental studios and most of them seem to be 8 metres (which actually gives about 6 metres working room).

I really really don't want to go any wider than 105mm - or 150 on my medium format.

280 inches is 7.1 metres so it'll be tight...
