Hi All,

I am about to buy a 5d classic, and the only lens I'll have to use on it is my 50mm, I'm looking to get a 17-40 in a few weeks, bit assuming I was to fall short and only had £200 to spend for a second hand lens what would you suggest? I only really shoot landscapes so doesn't need to have massive zoom.

All help is really appreciated!

Matt

perhaps buy some cheap manual Olympus OM primes or some Leica R or Zeiss glass. 24/2.8 should be easily doable, then it will get a lot more problematic as you go wider.

Canon 20/2.8 is not well regarded by the way. But perhaps 20-35mm USM may be worth a go. You will need to do corrections in Lightroom for CA and distortion before it looks half decent. Hopefully you will get away with sharpness by f/11 or so (btw don't think 17-40 is sharp, but it's very good otherwise).

Have a look at either the Canon 28mm f/1.8 USM, or the Samyang 35mm f/1.4 manual focus.
Depends on how wide you wanna go?

I shoot with a 5D Mk1 also.

£200 would get you a Tamron 28-75 2.8 which is both wide enough for landscape and also constant 2.8 which gives you a low light option over the 17-40.

I shoot with the Tamron on my 5D mk1 and would forego the 17mm for constant 2.8 but it depends on your landscape preference.

Cheers
Steve

How about the Tamron 24-135mm, i have one for my Nikon cameras, its really stunning, my mate has one for his Caonn 1DX but hes shifting to Nikon because of all the 1DX problems, if youre interested ill ask him what he wants for it.

Find £200 and get the 17-40, it's a cracking lens. You'll only regret it using some other cheaper lens. Most of my landscape images are taken with it

Just spoke to him, he says decent condition, approx 3 years old, not boxed, comes with original end caps and he will supply 2 protection filters, a Jessops and a Kenko

Been using it on a 1DX and previously on a 5D and 5D MKII

He wants £170 posted RMSD

If interested ill pop up a sale thread to be up front about it

I can second the 20-35mm.

I bought one when I had a 35mm SLR and APS-C DSLR and now use it now and again on my 5D. I find the results to be quite good and on the plus side it's light and compact and the USM makes it a joy to use.

Another lens with a following is the Cosina 19-35mm, actually it was badged by several different manufacturers.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'm just going to save up the bit extra and go for the 17-40.

In the meantime, I've seen there's a bit of a following of the Cosina, Tokina etc 19-35, and they're cheap/fun to play around with. What's peoples thoughts on these?

Matt
