Because the same thing happens to sharpness as to noise performance if a 1.6x frame is cropped from the full frame and compared. I should also be clear and state that I'm slightly biased towards detail in what I care about when talking about sharpness. Most people are biased towards microcontrast, and the two are inversely correlated. That said, any loss in microcontrast due to increased resolution can be downsampled out. Detail can't be upsampled in.

Also be aware I was talking about comparing area between crop and FF cameras in that post. So you'd be comparing the central 5MP of a D700 against a D300, and the central 8MP of a 5D2 against a 7D.

I could get all "selectively choosing completely ridiculous comparisons" and compare a first generation 5D to a D7000 where even the uncropped image loses. Of course, that ignores the DoF and framing (with wides) options that FF offers, and ignores that comparing a 2010 crop to a 2005 full frame is ridiculous as the reasonable comparison is 2010 to 2010 :).

It's the 'magic of FF' ridiculousness I dislike (both ways - saying there's no difference is just as bad as exaggerating it). FF offers real benefits, and there are reasons for them. There are also drawbacks in the cost of that increase in size, and unless a photographer is at the edge of one of those envelopes, their efforts are best spent elsewhere (unless it's simply an "I want FF" thing, and given this is a hobby for many, that's probably one of the best justifications :lol:).

But I do think it makes a good point. Not many folks seem to be aware of lens MFT and the big difference that it makes, ie when resolution demands go up as they do with a smaller sensor and its smaller pixels, so the lens struggles to keep up and can only deliver that resolution at a lower contrast level. The image simply doesn't 'look' as sharp, and you can't put optical contrast back in post processing (not satisfactorily, anyway).

It's not just about high pixel counts. Lots of pixels is good, but lots of big pixels is better. And if I could choose one over the other in terms of image quality, I'd take the latter. Eg, compare a Canon 7D (18mp, crop format) to a Nikon D700/D3 (12mp FF) and the Nikon wins every time.

I'd be willing to bet that DoF aside and even before downsampling, 99% of photographers, let alone non photographers, would not be able to consistently say which high ISO images were cleaner or which had better colour reproduction or dynamic range.

And at low ISO, the D7000 would win.

When the 7D's successor is released, I'd imagine that would be even better. Such is the nature of technology, lucky us :)

when I changed from a 40D to a 5D2 I saw no disadvantages only a significant increase in IQ. I'd never buy a crop camera again
 
Who really cares who's car is better, my bike is better than your bike.

Don't we all chose what we have either according to what we can afford, or in most cases such as mine the best tool for the job, I use cropped for a reason, and that is all that matters :)
 
Bet my bike is better than yours ;) Really too!

I'm with Poah, I went from a 40D to a 5D and the difference in image quality is huge.

True but at the end of the day. Ff had more plus points then crop.
