FujiFilm GFX - Fuji unveil a medium format camera

Is the sensor real medium format or is it just a bit bigger than 35mm?

Steve.

Technically yes.
However there is not a standard to medium format.

If you compare the Fuji to that of say a Phase one XF both are medium format cameras but the phase one sensor is bigger again.
The fuji sensor is the same size as that in the new Hasselblad.

My understanding was that aything bigger than 35mm but smaller than large format.

Yep, but Fuji are insisting that it's a new sensor, I guess much like the X-T2's sensor is different to that of the Nex-7.

Fujifilm is quite experinced with signal readout and processing, so I would expect that they get better results out of the sensor even if the basis is the same as the one used in Pentax/Hasselbad cameras.

Yes, it seems Fuji chose function over design this time. I hope they will be successful with the new system, that would help my beloved X system to survive :)
