Fuji X100 Vs Olympus E-P3

Times have moved on though, even the most basic spec DSLR will see it paired with an 18-55mm lens for flexibility. You don't see many people using fixed focal length lenses as their only lens these days. If Fuji releases another camera of this ilk I think it would be foolish not to look into interchangeable lenses.

X100, no contest.

The tiny sensor on the Olly is enough to put me off, and the x100 is so uber cool!

Not sure I'd go that far, but it does seem to be a camera that has captured the imagination. The biggest black mark against it, beside the price, is the inability to change lenses, which will put a lot of people off.

It's a good job they did put people off, or the queues to buy them would be even longer. Clearly there are plenty of interested parties, and this is not a jack-of-all-trades camera like, say, the EP-3. It's a very specialist item, and this was intentional. Fuji was obviously surprised there was as much interest as there has been, hence the lack of stock even before the Fukushima accident.

Why a fixed focal length and fixed lens? So there needed to be no compromise in IQ.

By using a fixed lens, Fuji were able to perfectly match the sensor to the lens and enhance its light gathering abilities. This is why it has practically zero vignetting even wide open.

By altering the angle of the sensor microlenses, It also allowed them to mount the lens closer to the sensor, keeping the external portion of the lens as small as possible.

That's why there's unlikely to be a changeable or zoom lens version. It would be a totally different proposition.

You're more likely to get several different X200s - each one with a different focal length.

I think the beauty of the x100 is it's fixed.

35mm on a crop is a perfect focal length (my 35mm f/2 almost lives on my 50d) and not having to worry about what lens to put in the bag and switching and changing... Having just the one lens would be quite liberating!

If I didn't shoot so much sports I'd consider an x100 for myself.

I don't think Fuji have missed a trick with having a fixed lens.

For fuji to develop a camera and a series of lenses would have taken a lot longer than it took for the x100 to be released.

I'd be surprised if the x100 wasn't them dipping their toes to guage public reaction, and to establish themselves while they develop an interchangable system.

I'm a huge fan of primes (i don't own a single zoom) so this doesn't put me off, BUT, it would be a hugely more appealing camera if it did.

The X100 is a tool. It does a job. If you want to do a different job use a different tool. It's not as if there isn't a choice of cameras available.

Theres been rumours that Fuji are set to launch a m4/3 system camera later int he year but just rumours so far, I'd love to see an X100 style camera with changeable lenses, although if they go m4/3 its going to mean a smaller sensor.

I still have my eye on the x100, I prefer to use primes anyway and I never had the 35mm off my D700 so I don't feel I'd miss other focal lengths.

I almost picked one up from my local Jacobs the other day but pulled back at the last minute to ensure I wasn't just rushing into it.

Few people have mentioned the tiny sensor on the mft cameras which when you think about it is only a few mm in either direction. Its just playground chatter along the same lings of my dads do dar is bigger than your dads do dar. Wish people would get over the size of the 4/3 and M4/3 sensor size and just start enjoying photography again.

Both cameras as very good just depends what you want it for end of

Wow, digging up a year old thread. You must have really wanted to get that point in :)
