Evening,

A couple of week ago I posted a thread about downsizing from a D7200 to a mirrorless camera, I've now come to a decision, I've decided to keep the D7200 and get a small, cheap, entry level mirrorless camera for day to day use and keep the DSLR for the more advanced stuff...

I've narrowed it down to the Fujifilm X-A10 or the Lumix GX800, my main priorities are size/weight and the option to add on a basic 70-300 zoom lens*, so far, from a quick comparison, the Lumix seems the best contender.

*I know the focal length will be different for the Lumix due to it being M4/3.

Do any of you have any experience or opinion on either of the above cameras, or anything to add?

I've done a quick comparison, liked below as a google sheets doc.

Not having a VF would be a killer for me. I've tried living with back screen shooting and it's just not for me. Are you sure you can live without a VF and just use the back screen?

I know what you mean, but it'll be used for day to day stuff, days out with my son where I don't want the bulk/weight of the DSLR, an upgrade on the camera phone but small enough to throw in the (wifes) handbag, I've had a play with both and the screens seem fairly easy to use and responsive.

Looking at £200 on average for a mirrorless with VF and they seem larger and more serious which kind of detracts from the appeal of the basic entry level cameras.

I'll be keeping the D7200 for the more serious stuff.

My first M43 camera was the Olympus Pen EPM-1, which I also found impossible to use in bright sunlight, however this camera can be fitted with an optional viewfinder (and was by me on mine when necessary) although they are not cheap, even secondhand. Nearly all the Olympus Pens will take the viewfinder but the latest EPL-9 will not. All the Pens have IBIS, albeit it's a lower spec than the OMD cameras and I think almost all Pens have a hotshoe. The GX800 cannot take a viewfinder and only has a weak inbuilt flash, the camera has no hotshoe for an external flash, the latter may well be of no concern of course. So it might be worth looking at the 16MP Olympus Pens (EPL-5 upwards), these will be a very similar size to the GX800 and give similar picture quality. As entry level cameras, the Lumix GX800, the earlier GF series and all the Pen models seem to loose value faster than anything else on the planet, so it might well be worth looking for a low mileage secondhand camera. The cheapest way into M43 cameras with a viewfinder is such as the Lumix G3, which has depreciated to below about £75, it's not really pocketable but still small and lightweight, the viewfinder helps a lot and it takes very reasonable pictures. MPB currently has Lumix G3 cameras, various Pens and suitable lenses available, as does LCE.

My wife uses a Lumix G3 as her travel camera. I had an Olympus EPL-5 and viewfinder but did find putting on the viewfinder a faff and could lose the shot in the process, so I moved it on. My walk around camera is now an Olympus OMD EM10 Mk1 which I am very fond of indeed. I did subsequently buy an immaculate EPL-6 body with two genuine batteries and charger, it was cheaper to buy this than buy the genuine batteries and charger separately, the batteries and charger are the same as for the EM10.

I have no knowledge of the Fuji at all.
