Fuji to discontinue Velvia 50 in 5x4 and 10x8, as well as 120 format 160NS

Fujifilm Japan has just announced the global discontinuation of Fujichrome Velvia 50 slide film in 4×5″ and 8×10″ large formats, and 120 format Fujicolor 160NS Professional colour negative film.


Coming hot on the heels of the July 2021 ban of the sale and processing of Fujichrome Velvia 100 in the United States, the notice is effective immediately and final shipping dates range over the next 18 months.



The table below, taken from the official press release (Japanese), outlines the exact dates for each product:

My expectation is that Velvia 50 is not going to be around much longer in smaller formats either, although I hope I'm wrong.
 
As for Pro 160NS, it already was effectively discontinued. It hasn’t been available for a couple years of now with exception of Japanese market.

In terms of films they still produce, are we left with Provia and AcrosII? (Smaller Velvia 50 formats excepted)
 
I'd be OK if Provia was the best 120 slide film I could get, but if 35mm Velvia 50 is discontinued I will only shoot black & white in that format (not yet desperate enough to shoot digital). I just ordered some 35mm Ilford Pan F Plus to test in case the sharpest black & white film, Adox CMS 20 II, becomes unavailable, as I've heard it may. I have no use for any 35mm film faster than ISO 50. Adox CMS 20 II at ISO 20 is ideal.

Just as I'd completed my Hasselblad equipment collection! :banghead:

No I don't think so, over the past few years film sales have been steadily increasing ( so unfortunately have prices) but companies have been streamlining there range. There's still a fairly good selection of black and white but colour is a bit more problematic.

Ffordes are still selling Pro 400H print in 120, plus Provia 100, Velvia 100 and Velvia 50 in 120. They have Kodak Portra 160 and 400 as well. I haven't checked other stockists, but I think it's fair to say that these films will never be any cheaper than now if you have spare funds and fridge/freezer space.

I could stockpile but it makes me wonder if the chemistry for these films will go the same way if demand drops.
My guess is that B&W will be around for quite some time so all is not lost.
For now I'll switch to Ektachrome and continue my one man quest to keep the E6 process going.
 
A post from Japan based seller B.S. Kumar on Photrio today has this info:
Velvia 50 8x10 is extremely difficult to obtain. Fuji has told my distributor not to accept any more orders for this film. He is hoping that Fuji will fulfil the orders already placed. I'll know next week. A few shops have some boxes, but at higher prices. They will not reserve any film - strictly first come, first serve. The big retail chains stopped sales of Velvia 50 4x5 and 8x10 on the 15th itself.

Prices for Velvia 50 4x5 and 160NS have increased slightly, to 15,300 JPY and 5,040 JPY respectively.
