Lol Sorry to bother you all for more which camera advice but i've finally narrowed my choice down to these two!

2nd hand D200
New Fuji S5pro

I thought i had made my mind up and was going for the D200 but after seeing a couple of great deals on the Fuji today i'm back to undecided!

Would love to hear the pros and cons of either camera from anybody who's used or owned either of them!

Most of my paid work is from music gigs, covering local events and occasional promo work for a couple of local companies.I love shooting extreme sports and motorsports for a hobby but the main reason i need this camera is for the paid stuff as at present i do not have a back up camera!

Also got my first wedding in December which i don't want to do without back up kit.I want to get the camera now so i have plenty of time to get used to it before then.

Any opinions/advice muchly appreciated:D

Would also like to know what i should check or any questions i should ask if i do go to look at 2nd hand camera!:D

im looking to replace my nikon d200 with a fuji s5 as the fuji is supposedly better than the nikon for people/portraits.

if you like shooting extreme sports then id possibly conisder the d200 as it has amuch faster frame rate!

I've used both extensively, although I don't shoot any of things you do, I shoot nature / landscape / travel.

For my purposes, the S5 Pro is a far nicer imaging device. But that I mean that pictures look "nicer", due to the colours / tonality / dynamic range and low(ish) noise at high ISO. The IQ is the big plus.

For sports, then it will be too slow, you can do 3 fps, but you'd need to turn off the extended dynamic range, which will nullify the big plus point.

I would ALWAYS pick an S5 Pro over a D200, but I'm not you, and I don't shoot what you shoot...

Thanks for all the answers!

Still confused probably more than ever i've been offered a S3pro to have a play with for a couple of days(probably because the owner is trying to sell me it) Might give me more of an idea about Fuji in general but how does the S3 compare to the S5.

Puddleduck do you reckon the S5pro is better than D200 at higher iso? The opinions i've had from others tell me it would a the better camera for shooting badly lit gigs with than the D200.

I'm trying to tell myself the paid work should come before the hobby stuff. It seems whichever one i choose i'm going to end up with something thats good for one and a compromise on the other.

Out of interest how much would you be selling the D200 for Penguin?

Gary did you buy the S5pro i can remember reading that you were thinking about it!

Still thinking, I do want it, but I dont want to stop using my D3...

Gary i want a D3 but way beyond my price range! Tell you what i'll get the S5pro and we can swap week about! Lol ok i know the answer to that one already!:D

Penguin i'm thinking the same i had made my mind up to get the D200 then seen the offer on the S5pro and went back to confusion!

I will give your D200 some serious thought though! Just need to decide which one would be the better option for me!

I wouldn't pay ANY attention to borrowing a S3 pro, it will put you off the S5 - it's painfully slow. Quality is good, but only if you can hack the wait.

The S5 is a different kettle of fish, an awesome camera and whilst it's still not a quick camera, it's a vast improvement and unless you're shooting hardcore sports you shouldn't need any faster.

Cheers,
James

Yes its better - not night and day, but its about 2/3rd to 1 stop better.

Here is a comparison I shot yonks ago, ISO1600.

As you can see, the S5 Pro is cleaner with much less detail sapping luminance noise.

HTH

please remember guys, no selling outwith the classifieds :)

Thanks Moos3H Main reason i agreed to try it was to get an idea of the pic quality i think my mate already knows i'm unlikely to buy it! Some mates are playing their first gig so i might take it along to that for a bit of fun!

get a S3 and a S5

get the S3 converted to IR as it does these shots superbly

the S5 is a greta camera like they say if not for sport - but I am sure its 5 frames and the S3 is 3 frames (unless the buffer has been upgraded)

would recommend the Nikon 18-70 dx lens for portraiture and landscape

Thanks for posting those pics up Puddleduck! The S5 seems to be the better choice for my gig work! Why am i thinking i'm going to end up buying the S5 for the paid stuff then buying something else in a couple of months for the sports stuff!

Sorry Dod!

Thanks Joe mmm tempting especially at the price he's offering it to me how much to convert an S3 to IR?

Yes, its too slow for sport... I did an airshow or two and found the speed just fine.

Nice pics Puddleduck! I'm thinking the S5 might be the better choice for now!
At least then i would have the better camera for paid jobs and can make do with it and the D40 for now with the sports stuff.

Good choice mate, supposed to be a cracking camera.

Any news of its replacement?

Gary.

Nice pic Joe! Sadly too much cash to blow right now but tempted to grab the camera and convert it later!

Fuji are gone as far as DSLRs are concerned.

The S5 Pro sold pretty well, but they don't make money on them - they buy the D200 bodies from Nikon (and they are not cheap), make no money on lenses so its really a lossleader.

Nowadays Fujifilm are a medical imaging company in reality.

I reckon it's probably the right choice for me at the moment just hope they have some left in stock!

If they've started dropping the price that probably means the replacement will be annouced right after i buy it!:D

Lol how easy? Me DIY and careful are not usually mentioned in the same sentence:lol::D

It's just unscrewing a few bits, very straightforward- I did a D70s and it worked fine.

Trouble was I got a tiny wee bit of dust behind the filter and tried to cut corners stripping it down again- and broke a tiny cable in my haste, which Nikon wouldn't sell me.

Ended up having to buy a scrap camera and strip it for spares :bonk:

Wonder how easy it would be to remove the AA filter in that case?

One thing - the S5 Pro has a feirce AA filter and it never gets really sharp, even with amazing glass. I keep meaning to geld the AA filter from one of mine...

That S3 is looking very tempting! I have to admit i really like the idea of having an IR camera!

I don't think the later Nikon (so probably the S5 as well) are quite as easy to work on as the older (D50/70 and the S3) cameras, iirc you have (at the least) some de/resoldering to do to disassemble them
