I've been mulling this over for a while now, I'm not thinking of buying one yet though*, but I like the idea of the Fuji GW series.

Anyone used one, have any thoughts good or bad?

Cheers

Andy

The only issue I've seen (for me at least) is that filtering is a bit of a pain as you can't see the TTL view. However I do fancy one for travelling light with medium format.

Also have the usual rangefinder problems with regards close focus etc. They do all look rather nice though!

I also remember when I looked into them that there was something about servicing after every 500 rolls of film (they have a counter on the bottom). Fuji don't service them any more but some sources suggest that this is a bunch of rubbish anyway!

Even shooting regularly I think 500 rolls would be about 10 years for me :D

They would take me about 500 years to develop! When I looked into it there were a number of cameras with that kind of milage on though.

It's the closest you can get to large format quality without faffing about with individual film holders etc. Very good image quality, and the build quality seemed pretty decent even on my GW690 III (the plastic one) Close focus is ok, for a rangefinder, I think it was something like a meter.

The biggest con for me is the fixed lens, ~40mm equivilant and I really don't like that focal length. Not wide enough for wide, and not tele enough for portraits. It was originally marketed at tourist groups or something, so that explains it.

Go for the I or II series if you find a nice one, they are cheaper and optically the same I think.

At your current rate Rob, that figure should be more like 500 Years :D

Tell me about it :(

Thanks for your thoughts guys, something else to mull over/save up for.

Andy

One more thing actually! get a II or III version, they come with shutter locks, and a wasted frame on these things is like throwing £2 away :bonk:

Thanks TGS, my memory is getting to be about as much use as a chocolate fire guard. I even contributed to that thread on numerous occasions....doh!

No problem. I had to search for a while to find it and also started wondering if I was imagining having discussed this before :lol:.

By the way, I don't have much to show for my GW690III photographically but this gives you a bit of an idea of the kind of image quality you can get (this taken on Provia 400x):
