Their phone app is awful, always only update my cameras using the SD card. I just can't imagine a disconnection between app and camera during an update would do to the camera.

I used to really like it. I never seemed to have any problems with it.

It stopped working for me a couple of firmware updates ago though, and Fuji don't seem to be in a hurry to fix it. Image transfer works fine but live view shooting is horribly broken, causing the camera to freeze, occasionally resetting it to factory defaults. They recently fixed the same issue on the newer bodies, but for some reason (£££), they seem to have forgotten to fix the "older" bodies.
 
I have done the last two updates on my X-T4 via the app with zero issue.

As I understand it it only uses the app to download the update before sending it to the camera. If connection was lost I don't think it would be an issue as once the update starts it disconnects from he app anyway.

I winder if what's happened is it's sometimes corrupting whilst being sent.

What I find weird however is that they seem to be saying that regardless of us being on the latest firmware that we should do it again when they re-release it so wonder if there is more going on here. I may of course just be misinterpreting things!

As for the app itself. Yes. woeful! Was rumoured that a completely new app was coming. Maybe we will hear more at the April summit.
 
Not had an issue of late with the app - Updates all fine, used it for live shooting and downloading individual images
