Yes
I've seen a number of comparisons online between these two lenses. There's a fair price difference between the two, therefore would I be disappointed with the 50-230 ?

Optically you won't be disappointed because it is a great lens with very little weight. These can be found at a very cheap price second hand. For me I want the 55-200 because the lens feel better in the hand, but it weights more then the 50-230.

These days I struggle with a lens without an aperture ring. I just about tolerate the 27mm, but even that frustrates me as I instinctively grasp the lens barrel. Optically I found the 50-230 very good but I had to put a little more work into the raw files to get the same "punch".

If your budget allows for it then go for the 55-200. If is faster, better build quality and has the aperture ring

I've tried both, and would suggest not trying out the 55-200 before the 50-230, because then you will notice a big difference in every way. But, in it's own right, the 50-230 is a decent lens.

Thanks for the advise so far folks
