Fuji 100-400?

Would have mine already but LCE weren't open when I went into town earlier. Why can't shops be open when I want them to be? ;)

Isn't that a bit too early ;) I feel your pain though, I have to wait till Monday

Picked it up at 09:30 but then had to meet the MiL for coffee and THEN had to nip out to the garden centre. Of course, while out there, Mrs Nod (OK, and me!) spotted a small potting table at a decent price (last year's stock) so when we got home, I had to assemble that before playing.

I was expecting a little hesitance from the pairing on an X-Pro1 but in today's watery sunshine and on waving twigs, it was pretty quick and accurate at 400mm with the telecon fitted. Not tried it on the X-T1 yet - lunch called! (And since it was a toasted bacon sarnie with smoked cheddar, I wasn't going to let it go cold!!!)

FWIW, I haven't yet updated all the firmwares in the bodies and lenses, a little job for the weekend maybe.

Again, only a quick play and still without any firmware updates.

With the telecon fitted, the X-T1 and the lens balance nicely on the tripod foot (no grip). As expected, it's not light but it is lighter than the Nikkor near equivalent (tried that on a D750 at the same time as an X-Pro2 with the 100-400 + telecon). AF with the telecon fitted is snappy even now the sun's off the areas I have been testing it on. Hard to pick out which shots are from the centre and which are from the corners at 400mm with the telecon and no sign of fringing. AF all but silent. Going to have to play with bags to see if I need a(nother!!!) new one.

Would you say there is a noticeable difference in focus speed between the XT1 and XPro2 when using the lens and TC?

Can't compare them directly since I have an X-Pro1 not 2 but I did have a quick play with the combination on the 2 in the shop. AF seemed reasonable on it but not as quick as on the XT, although I was in more light at home. The 2 managed to focus on the darkest corner of the shop. Both bodies are faster than me at achieving accurate focus!

A few test shots from it taken last evening. A few real life shots (full frame) HERE.

And a couple of branches against the fence and a white van to see if it fringes.
All shots are JPEGs and are untouched other than cropping/resizing.

First thoughts and I m very impressed. Built quality is excellent and what one would expect from Fuji. Not too heavy but not too light and balances well with the Xt1 + ve or the large grip. Image stabilization is unbelievable. Can't wait for Saturday to get out and test it properly :)

Got mine through from Wex yesterday, went for the option with the TC and arrived as two totally separate boxes rather than a kit of the two combined. First impressions are good, but will wait for the weekend for a better try out.

Big question - any suggestions for a bag to carry it in? It's so much smaller than my Nikon kit my existing backpacks are way over-sized..

I'm possibly facing a similar conundrum WRT a bag for the expanding Fuji kit! However, reducing it slightly might allow it to fit in a current bag rather than needing a new one. I reckon that I can now have a 3 lens kit to cover everything from 10mm up to 560mm and only one body, although there might be a slot for another. Will be having a good play with a few options tomorrow evening while Mrs Nod's out (so I can spread the kit out over the sofa where she usually sits!)

Well, it fits in the old bag, although that leaves no room for the waterproof Nikon. Pretty sure it's over the weight allowance for the holiday flights too but I can always play the pocket game at check in.

Anyone tried the 100-400 with the 2x telecon? It apparently fits and works, just don't know how well! Will have to check @StewartR 's site to see how much it'll cost me to hire one (if he has one!)

ETA. Just checked and LFH don't appear to have one for me to try. :(

EATA! Only one in the refurb store so went for it. Will report back once I have it and have had a play/test.

As promised, a very quick test of the lens and the 2x converter which has just arrived. Both shots shot handheld with the shutter and aperture set to A, ISO 200. All EXIF should be available through the Flickr click through. Used a can of beans as a standard sized object with reasonably fine print on the label. First shot in bright afternoon sunlight, second in shade but within a minute or 2 of the first. Slightly oddly, the Flickr EXIF doesn't tell you that there was a teleconverter so reports it as just 400mm (600mm in 35mm EFL terms.)

Looked at purely as a shot, the second isn't at all impressive, I'm the first to admit it BUT look at the EXIF... 1/12th handheld. Using an effective focal length of 1,200mm in 35mm terms! Deliberately stuck to ISO 200 to make it difficult for the lens and camera. AF was reasonably swift as well, especially when you consider that the naked lens is f/5.6 at the long end so f/11 with the converter. Really looking forward to using this combination on holiday, especially on the birds at Agia Lake.

Hoping! Not looking too promising at the moment but fingers are crossed...
