What are the roads like where you are ?.

Where I am the roads are breaking up at a rate I have never experienced before and I am not just talking about potholes, large patches of damaged tarmac are showing up due to the extreme frost, even on the main A1 dual carriageway!.
It is going to cost a lot of money for repairs when the big freeze ends.
 
The roads round here were bad enough without all the ice but we will see what the ice has done once it melts but I doubt it will be good
 
i have noticed some more holes and general damage on one of the roads near me too.

Anyone know how to report potholes/road damage to the local council?

Do as your avatar does............point the cracks out:thumbs:....seriously just drop them an email, we did and had 3 potholes sorted in 3 days
 
there are a few bits of road left between the pot holes around here. Do they have the same problems abroad or do we have a special type of frost, like the special snow and leafs that shut our railways down?
 
we've got the same problem, big chunks of the top layer disappearing, not good :(

Well I went to the French Alps in 2006 and the road surfaces were absolutely perfect, spotless and I'm sure they get worse ice and snow at 2,600m above sea level..can't speak for anywhere else though..

As for the roads in Norwich, generally they are very poor with lumps missing all over the place.

I can't forget last year when I saw a couple of cars go up roundabout islands where they had the front axle ripped off due to big holes :(

Here in France, the roads seem to cope quite well. One thing climatically that may differ (certainly in this region) is that the frosts are almost always after dry days so there's very little moisture to freeze within the road surface. The roads aren't gritted but don't appear too slippery even at -5.

Having said all that, I'll probably tear a front wheel off tomorrow in a pit the size of a bomb crater.

What rot! nothing you can do will stop a road surface cracking in heavy frost, you can't even fix it properly until it's thawed out. The roads maintenance companies have enough to do right now trying to keep the roads open,


Seeing lots of frost damage up here as well, damage on main roads is worst as traffic is heavier and adds to the breakup.

i guess thats probably the problem, the freeze thaw action of the water getting into the road surface

So is it a major problem in countries that have this kind of weather year in year out or do they use a different compound to cope with the colder weather
 
Same round near me. Constantly banging in and out of holes on my way to work.
 
not many pot holes near me in the cotswolds, just what look like strips breaking off on braking points, bloody handy in the snow as they're a bit more grippy than clean tar!
 
I drove back from Sussex yesterday and there were potholes in lots of areas, even on major roads. In our area of Essex some of the main roads are riddled with pot holes. It seems like they only just fixed them from last winters freeze and now they have opened up again.
 
Well now we know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall I guess :)
 
It is really so odd that a country so far north of the equator gets caught out by cold weather......I`m sure the same pandamonium exists across the North Sea in Scandinavia.....:naughty:
 
Can't see the surface of the raods and haven't done for 3 weeks but i think they are gonna be a right mess when this lot clears up..
 
The roads near me are a complete mess too. There's now a large about of gravel on most of the roads, where that chucks that were torn out of the top layor have broken down. Still they seem to have fixed most of them from the last cold snap.
 
I should fin out in about March !
 
Roads and, more so, pavements all breaking up due to frost heave.
Previous patchwork repairs seem to be the worst affected.
 
Yep, previous poor surfaces with poor repair work. Now the repair work has been ripped out leaving HUGE craters

Our council have been out and put 'temporary road surface' signs on some of the problem areas.
 
If councils didn't use sub standard materials in the first place and then use a sticking plaster for the infills of potholes, they wouldn't be able to go on their jollies to their twin towns and feed themselves £100k per year times many.
 
Right old mess we have out there now, I am having to drive very carefully on the country roads to avoid suspension crunching potholes!!.
 
Theres a massive hole up our street, the police are looking into it.:) boom boom :)

Better than dicussing 'hole in the wall'

Huge problem this. Water/snow dropping in to holes. Thaws and then freezes and expands.

I think that watchdog managed to prove that you can take a council to court if your car is damaged by a badly repaired pothole. Just a thought.
