Front & Back Curtain • Short Flash Duration.

This studio exercise for my son was all about HSS • Front & Back Curtain.
He had to find the props to be used but had no idea. I gave him some tips
as to what could be possible options… and then the click came. He swiftly
went to his room and came back with this… toy!

HSS at 1.6 seconds ( if i'm reading your figures correctly ) shutter speed isn't HSS unless you mean something else by HSS
the photo's are quite interesting but i'm not sure what the experiment is showing, i suppose if the rotation was the same direction on each shot it would show the difference between 1st and 2nd curtain sync with leading or trailing light trails but can't fathom how HSS is applied

You're absolutely right Mark!
The exercise was really about HSS the way you and I understand it, and it was
a successful session… but these shots belong to the second part of the session.

The picture of the first part of the session were the trails. Successful but not so
pretty. The second part was the trails trying to synchronize a short duration flash
at the end and at the beginning of the trail, targeting the right moment at the end
or the beginning of the trail… that was not easy without the laser trigger as, in this
exercise, I did not allow it. The third part was the proper HSS with settings to freeze
both spinning elements and seeing what was the necessary minimum speed to achie-
ve the freeze. As you can imagine, these shots, though successful, were rather bo-
ringly static.

Examining all the results of the three parts exercise, we concluded that the takes of
the second part were more appealing. They were PPed and posted as HSS • Front
& Back Curtain and that was, considering the posted pictures, my mistake. Since they
are not resulting of the third part but part two, I corrected the title.
