I will try to describe this as best as i can! im just starting to get to grips with lightroom and editing in photoshop, when i choose in lightroom to edit in photoshop (to resize and sharpen) it then opens photoshop, i make the changes then save the image, this then saves in lightroom as an 'edit' but saves in the same place, is there any way i can make it save to a new folder in lightroom were i can say put it in 'sharpend for the web' rather than bury it in the original import location ? its making it hard to find items and when i export from lightroom to make sure i dont resize anything ive already resized! ive tried to search for examples but cant seem to find anyone doing anything similar

When you do an 'Edit In', Lightroom will always create a new file (.psd or .tiff) in the same directory as the original. It then passes this to PS so that when you save it, you're saving over the new file. So you'll always end up with the original and the edited file in the same directory.

I can think of two ways of handling the problem:

1) Since you're only editing one file in PS at a time, as soon as you're back in LR drag the .psd or .tiff into the directory you want to keep it in. Or, alternatively, drag the original file somewhere else.

2) If the .psd or .tiff file contains exactly the same as the original file, i.e. you haven't told LR to 'Edit in PS with LR adjustments' then you could just delete the original file. What I do is to edit my raw file in Elements as a .psd then make sure that the first thing I do is make a 16-bit duplicate of the original layer and then convert that to 8 bits to work on. The original layer never gets touched and so contains exactly the same as the original raw file. If I ever want to go back and re-edit the file I can take it back into Elements, turn off the edited layers and create a new set, then save the result.

thanks , i think option 2 is to confusing as its nice to have the original file , option one is the one im going for the 'drag and drop' approach but the thing that annoys me is that its easy to forget to do this - also it 'moves' the image to the end 'row' of what im editing so i have to then scroll though and hunt to 'were id got to ' which is annoying , what would be nice is when i select ' edit in photoshop' and it creates a new file and places this in a new directory for me NOT in the workflow im using , im sure there must be an eloquent way to do this - or am i expecting to much and am being lazy ?

Theres something not right. This is easy. Just save as and place the image where you want it. When it saves and you return to lightroom press G to enter tbe grid mode then view>sort >capture time. The image will now be placed nextvto the original.

ah now that works - sorting after saving to 'capture time' so many little tweaks that make the difference in lightroom... now is there anyway when saving in photoshop that it saves to a different folder which is in lightroom?

Not sure I know what you mean Tom? You can save anywhere from Photoshop.

If you select the folder in Lr, any images that are in that folder should appear (if they have been imported into Lightroom in the first place).

If not right click the folder, select "sync folder" and allow Lr to import the appropriate images.

yes you are right , i ment if i save it to a folder do i need to re import the image in to lightroom or can it sync or update ?

If you "edit in photoshop" and save it to a different folder it won't need to be reimported.
