From D90 to D7200 or get X100F?

No
I’m used to my D90 (with 18-105 lens) which I’ve had a good few years. Thinking of upgrading to the D7200 but just before I was going to take the plunge I read about the X100F and am shocked by the rave reviews it’s getting. Die hard DSLR aficionados are saying this is the only camera they’re now taking with them! Really? If it’s that good perhaps the ease of portability whilst maintaining good quality shots will make it a good alternative? But won’t I miss the zoom function and spend my life cropping and editing afterwards?
What do you guys think?

If you want to take fast people photos on the go it sounds great. It all depends what you want ? I downgraded from the D7100 to the D5500 and love it. Lightweight and image quality for shooting landscapes and cities.

Who can say if you will miss zoom. Only you can know that. Try going for a daily walk with your d90 and 18-105 set at 23mm only. If you get frustrated then you will know

I have a D750 and an X100F. The Fuji is an amazing camera. While the D750 is my camera of choice for paid work, as well as general stuff, I am more and more just taking the Fuji out as it is so small and light in comparison. I even went to Orlando and Sth Carolina and only took my old X100T, 95% of the time it was fine, but I am a fan of primes and often will shoot with a 50mm or 85mm rather than a zoom.

I have a D800 and an X100T, the older model. I find I use the X100T more because it's small and light and it's with me most of the time, but I still get out the SLR when I want to shoot something specific that needs a wider or longer lens. The fixed focal length of the X100T is limiting. Sometimes this is frustrating. Sometimes it has forced me to get closer and has produced a better shot from a different perspective, which has made me re-think how I use a zoom on the SLR. It's nice to have live view in the viewfinder - I use quick tweaking of the exposure compensation dial a lot on the X100T, and I miss this when I go back to the SLR (using the rear LCD isn't the same). The AF on the X100T isn't as good as it is on the SLR (especially continuous AF, which really isn't up to much - don't know how much this has changed on the X100F). If you feel a fixed lens will be too limiting, there are plenty of smaller cameras with interchangeable lenses, including from Fuji, though nothing I think as tiny as the X100 series with similar quality.

IF you can handle (and enjoy!) using a single focal length (yes, I know there are supplementary lenses to fit onto the front of an X100 but that kind of spoils the small and portable idea) then see if you can get on with the X100. I did seriously consider an X100 but decided on a pancake lens for the X-Pro1 instead.

Thank you all for your replies. Thank you in particular for GTG’s suggestion to walk around with my current 18-105 set to 23mm and see how frustrated I get. I’ll definetely do this. I’ll report back!

Meanwhile, to aid in the weighing up debacle of the more portable cameras - if I’m to get one of those - would you all rate the X100F highest?

Just to throw these in the mix, I’ve heard good things about the Sony A6300 and also the (miniature sized) Ricoh GRII. But then if you don’t want to carry any kind of weight around with you and still take shots for memory purposes, isn’t that what smartphones are for? (I’ve got an iPhone 8 which has a decent camera for a phone).

Any thoughts, having thrown this into the equation?

PS: I should say that I *need* speed! I have a child and a dog who won’t stand still for my photographic endeavours. And I hate ending up with blurry pictures or the back of their heads

Yes, I believe it is the best. Fuji cameras look great but also give amazing IQ and features. The early X100 was too slow IMO for kids, and while the F will not match my D750 it is not too far away. Used it in Disney to snap the kids on various rides and all came out well.
