hey,
my d70 has started playing up half way through my last college assignment (nightmare), the shutter has gone really slow no matter what its set to and i keep gettin the err flashin up and it refuses to take the shot, anyway i will see if i can get it fixed but im looking to upgrade anyway, i fancy trying something with live view but i would like to keep my lenses that fit my d70, ive been looking at the d3100 and the d5000 but dont really know enough about either to choose between them, and im not sure if my lenses will fit, i mostly do portraits but have started doing lots more nature and action photography (banger racing) lately so i want one that will be good for everything really, since the rule change i cant view the classifieds so im relying on ebay atm for general prices and they seem around the same price, any advice on which one to look into more would be greatly appreciated. thankyou x:thinking:
 
How about a D90? If you're patient you can get a decent used body for £300-£350.
I just picked one up for the missus @ £300 with less than 1000 actuations!!
 
Another vote for the D90. It's a natural progression from the D70 I would have thought.
 
the d90 is what i wanted to start with before i got the d70 actually so i will look into that again aswell, would my lenses fit a d90?, i guess the d90 is a better camera than the d3100 and d5000 and they are around the same price for second hand d90 and new 3100 &5000, i told my tutor i fancied a d90 when she told me it was time to put the d70 on ebay and she thought a d90 would be the best one for me too, it was just the thought of a brand new one that was making me think of the 3100 and 5000 tbh lol. thanks guys
 
Yeah I'd also opt for the D90 or a D80 if you find one as a really good deal, it really would be natural and any AF lenses will autofocus compared to the D3100 and D5000. Alternatively if you want to go up a notch look for a second hand D300 going for around £600 roughly :)
 
I wouldn't go for anything less than a D80/90 as despite being newer with the D5000 (or whatever) you'll be frustrated by the lack of controls...
 
right im going to look for a d90 for now then i think, i will put the d70 in for a service to see if i can get away with using it for a few more weeks to get my assignment finished then i will have to get a new one pretty quick as i have a christening to shoot on 1st may, i might take the opertunity to rent one for the day actually and see what i prefere once its in hand, thanks for the advice, very helpful as usual
 
As it's been said, the D90 has direct access for many of it's controls and settings. It also has the in body focussing motor so it allows the use of older lenses.

The D3100 & 5000 are both menu driven and they also lack the in body motor which limits the lens choice unless you particularly want to manually focus the older lenses.
 
i do like to manual focus atm as i discovered at the banger racing last week its not as hard as i thought and i actually think its sharper? still learning atm but have set myself the challenge to stay away from auto completly for the time being as im not learning much by letting the camera decide everything for me lol
 
One more vote for the D90. The D5000 has the tilting display going for it and maybe a more advanced video mode than the D90 but it also has the same sensor and none of convenience of having loads of controls on the body. Also I think it has a mroe advanced AF system.

Keep in mind though that the D3100 despite being quite basic has a better high ISO handling than either and even better video.

Keeping away from auto doesn't mean having to go to manual and using manual mode doesn't mean you can't use auto-focus.

Using P, S or A (especially the last two) will let you decide how the image will come out and are valuable steps on the learning curve :)

I'm another vote for the D90, btw :clap:
 
I'm after a D90 also, i would bite the arm off someone selling one for sub £375 with low actuations, can't seem to find them for under £400 at the moment from the usual outlets.
 
Yep D90:thumbs: . . . I went backwards to a D5000, needed the animated screen (I thought), for low angle shots, dodgy knee, the 5000 drove me mad with the 'menu driven access' and small letterbox size view finder . . . great image quality . . . but I could only stand it for 6 months:thinking:

These days I split my use between a 'Panasonic G1' (officially my partners camera:naughty:) very under estimated small, light 'DSLR type' camera with animated screen . . . and a D90.

An expensive mistake going backwards . . . CJS:shrug:

thanks for that, i went to jessops today and a few other camera shops in truro and the d3100 and d5000 are the same price new as the second hand d90's, im defo getting a d90 in the next few weeks, the guy in jessops tried getting me to wait 2 weeks and get the new d5100 when it comes out cos he said its based on the d90 so will be in a different class to the d3100 and d5000 and the like, it will be way out of my price range i expect but sounded good and if people are upgrading they will be selling their d90's, yippee
 
Although I seriously doubt that the Jessops clerk will have any knowledge about when a D5100 comes out, I am looking forward to see how it stacks up. The D7000 seems like it creates a whole different category of cameras slotting above the D90 as opposed to be just an upgrade to it. So maybe the D5100 will be the actual upgrade to the D90. Which is a lot of camera for plenty of people. Especially if it inherits the brilliant D90 viewfinder :)
 
Unless it has a built in focusing motor I can't see many people upgrading.

People upgrading from the D90 are more likely to go for the D7000

Oh yes people that have a D90 will upgrade to a D7000+ camera but for a lot of people not wanting to spend the cash on a D7000 will find a 600£ D5100 with the viewfinder of the D90, a few more buttons and the arguably very good D3100 sensor will be plenty good.
 
actually i think it was the guy in 'cornwall camera centre' that said about the d5100, he said its coming out middle of april and they would have them in stock then, he said its basically an uprated d90
 
I'd also been thinking about a used D90, but as they started to be advertised new (body only obviously) at £509, I thought I would wait a bit longer until I could afford a new one, now though they seem to have gone back up to £549( Calumet). So the used ones for £350ish are starting to look more attractive again. I haven't heard anything about a D5100 but they will sure to be over my price range.
 
I would say the obvious D70 upgrades would be D80, D90 or a D7000.

I would imeadately discount the D3000, D3100 and D5000 as niether have a focus motor so you are limited to AF-S lenses.

I went (for work use) from a D70 to a D5000 and whilst some features are useful the live view is pretty slow to focus. The menu driven menus just don't compare to the button and I miss that useful screen on the top :'( I just have never felt that the D5000 compares well to the D70 making the D5000 a backward step not an upgrade.

I personally would look to buy a D7000, but the D90 as it is a very capable camera.
