Hi guys, long story short, I sent my Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 off for repair at Intro2020, as it was out of focus towards the left hand side of the frame. I've received an estimate back, the repairs will come to approx £110.

Now here's the question: Is it worth spending that much doing up the lens, or do you think it would be better putting that money towards a newer lens - i.e. the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 OS?

£110 kind of seems like a lot of money, I could probably stomach it if it was something like a Nikon 17-55 being repaired.

Anyway, any advice would be welcome,

Thanks,

Dan

If you don't repair it can you replace it for £110, or is it going to cost more for a replacement and are you happy to spend that ?

Good point. £110 is cheaper than buying a new one, just seems like a lot of money to fix a lens that's around £250 new. Mind you, I suppose it will come back calibrated and cleaned too, so it will almost be like getting a new lens. I'll prob just bite the bullet and get it fixed. I need a cheaper hobby ... :)

I take it it is out of warranty don't tamron come with 5 year warranty now
you could sell it on ebay listing it's fault, you will be surprised how much faulty items make on ebay add the 120 to that and see how far off your new lens you would be, don't forget the ebay fees though
sigma uk purchased lenses come with a 3 year warranty I believe, but you have to register them else you only get 12 months I think

Having had a lens (Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8) repaired and calibrated by Intro 2020 I wouldn't hesitate to do it again - sharpness was epic when I got it back! Mind you they only charged me £48 not £110 :)

Well, I'm going against the trend here, I sent my 28-75 to Intro 2020 just inside its warranty period for a focus issue and they sent it back, a little better, but still not right. Sent it back again, still not quite 100% when it returned, and it lasted a few weeks like that before the issue cropped up again. I didnt bother to send it back as I really had no confidence it would be fixed properly.
In the end, I sold it ( either here or on ebay, cant remember) with the fault declared and got more that I expected.
