My computer got infected with a virus on Sunday, it basically replaced a whole lot of .exe files with the virus all over my computer destroying the originals in the process.

Anyway after looking around the concensus was that the effort of removing the virus isn't worth it and to format and start fresh.....THANKFULLY I make regular backups on my server so it was just a case of a format, stick in a restore disk and choose the backup that I want to put back. It could have been so much worse!

I shudder to think that I could have lost 5 years worth of photos, work from uni, all my music and videos.

Make sure you have a backup system, now I've experienced first hand what could happen I'm never going to be without one.

I had to do a data recovery on my girlfriend's PC after her dad formatted it last week while trying to do something (proving the saying 'a little knowledge is a dangerous thing'....)

Managed to recover 90% of her uni work and photos, was pretty lucky!

Might be a good idea to install some Anti Virus software as well

I agree. Ive learnt the hard way in the past, but Ill always backup now :)

The approach I use after having a disaster with an earlier PC (long story) is to have programs on one drive (these are easily re-installed from original media) and all data stored on a second internal drive. This way the probability of a virus or something similar wiping out precious data is diminished. And I back-up all data to two external drives. Given the modest cost of HDDs these days this is not really an expensive approach.

Thats something im gonna have to do in future! 3 weeks ago i decided to back up my pics to disc which i did apart from all my raw files which i decide to do this morning and what happens...ALL my picture files have conveniently decided to become corrupt, dont ask why or how cos i hav`nt a clue just will not open in any application whatsoever!

All in all im one p***** off togger!

again good advice there if you dont want the meltdown that i had to suffer!

Finally managed to do a backup last night to an external hard drive that will be taken to my folks house, just in-case of a fire or something. I have another one the same that ill rotate every few weeks. Ill also do a DVD over the weekend just to be double protected
