Thinking of heading down to shoot the protests against the nato summit. Got my nice little olympus loaded with fp4 and wondering if anybody is heading in to cover it and wants to meet for a cuppa or team up and share info

might be busy...

a friend who lives there was on about it yesterday ...

They mentioned Armed police on every motorway bridge from the Severn Bridge over to Cardiff, Using the university halls of residence to accommodate all the police they've brought in, spending 2-3 miles sitting in a convoy of police vans coming back and forward while driving in to work...

I wouldn't go Dave. Security is immensely strict and you might find that random photography is frowned upon by both sides.

Not a problem getting any pic's with this :exit:

Oh yea its going to be hectic as hell but everything is saying go cover it its got some potential for great images. Ive covered a EDL march before that was nasty so aware of reading atmosphere of situ and keeping aware of surroundings and escape routes if it gets nasty

I don't suppose you'd be aware of any escape routes unless you know Newport like the back of your hand ... which I doubt.

Funny you say that the route of the anti war march is avaible online and spent a fair bit of time in the port so shant be too bad at all.

If you get protesters taking exception to you photographing them and they get it in their heads to take your camera from you and stick it where the sun doesn't shine, you're going to have to leg it a bit sharpish down side streets and back alleys. You're not going to have time to stop and consult your map for the best escape route to take ... are you.

I went to the LSX protest with a couple of cameras and the photographers probably outnumbered the protesters. The hardcore crusties seemed more concerned about winding up the police than stopping photographers, the majority of protesters were happy to pose for pictures.

I have two favourite moments from that day, seeing the queue of anti-capitalism protestors lined up outside Starbucks to use their toilets and Julian Assange making a speech where he got the crowd to chant, "we are all individuals" seemingly without noticing the irony or anyone completing the Life of Brian quote.

Are we going to be "officially" at war with anyone after the summit?

What's on then?

I don't watch the news or read papers!

Did anyone reply with "I'm not"?

Stevce.

And there's me thinking that all these anti-Nato people were all nothing more than violent radicals. :)

Positive shiny outlook there mate like it. As has been said covered a few high profile protests before and i dont go into this without planning and being able to read a crowd.

And there's me thinking that all these anti-Nato people were all nothing more than violent radicals. :)

I once met a couple of protestors against nuclear weapons who'd been arrested regularly for demonstrating outside Faslane submarine base. They'd be held for a few hours before being released with a warning, whereupon they'd go straight back to protesting. He was 74 and his wife was 68 at the time, both retired professionals, I believe he'd been a lecturer in Political Sciences or something similar.

Being against something doesn't always mean that people are violent radicals. I'd be more suspicious of someone making sweeping generalisations than someone protesting against something they don't believe in.

H'mm I'd rather see all the Nato stuff from press photographers, from around the world, for free.... online :D Ok I admit I've never been interested in street photography :(

I would love to attend something like this as a photographer. Would love to see any results if you decided to go.

My photographers OC is irked by the one copper with his shield upside down
