Freewell Variable ND filter set.

Hi,

I'm looking to get a set of filters for landscape photography. Initially I was looking at the KASE circular magnetic filters, but found it difficult to find a supplier. In my searching, I found Freewell Gear make magnetic filters in a wide range of sizes and filter options, and were the perfect solution. Then yesterday I found that Freewell have a crowd funding campaign for a set of variable ND filters, which includes Mist and CPL filters.

In my particular requirement, I'd like to use a CPL and stack a ND filter on it. I know I can do this with the fixed ND filter set.

Does anyone know if this can be done with the variable ND filter set?

I actually like the URTH filters, particularly because they seem to be readily available in Australia where I live, and the price is far more reasonable. However, I'm particularly after magnetic filters, and unfortunately, they don't currently have a magnetic filter set, or matching magnetic step up rings.

Having said that, I've been told that they will be releasing magnetic filters sometime after September. Unfortunately, I can't wait that long.

Ive seen a few reviews of the Freewell filters and it seems you can. Ben Harvey has done a review of these on Youtube as have a few others.
Are you UK based?
Wex sell Kase filters as do a few of the Kase Ambassadors via their websites. you order through the ambassidors website and Kase send them to you directly. They seem to be like apple products where they are all sold at the same price. Kase also have a UK website you can order through
 
Thank you for the info about Ben Harvey's Youtube review. I've watched quite a few reviews of the new Freewell magnetic variable ND filters, and think they are really impressive and a fascinating unique idea. Well done Freewell.

At this point, it still does not seem, with this kit alone, that I can have say a 3 stop ND filter and a CPL stacked on it. I'd actually need to get another CPL filter to do this, which Freewell support.

Also, like all other VND filters, there's still a hint of X-shadowing, and considering I want the filters only for photography, I've now decided to go for a set of variable ND filters, and stick with the fixed ND filters instead.

KASE where my first option for a magnetic filter kit, but as I live in Australia, they are just too hard to come by. In addition, when I compare the price, the Freewell filters are nearly 30% cheaper, and have a greater choice of filters to select from when choosing my kit, and they have free shipping nearly everywhere in the world for orders over $99 USD.

I have a Tokina 11mm-20mm lens with an 82mm lens thread, so now my only thing to figure out, is if a need the 82mm filter kit or go for the 95mm kit to avoid vignetting. I've ordered some cheap 82mm UV and CPL fitlers so I can test stack them to see if I have a vignetting issue, before I place an order.

It's great to see some interesting development and competition done in this area of photography. If I had the time, I'd wait a bit longer, to see what other companies are going to provide. I know K&F Filters currently have magnetic filters, but its only an ND1000, but I've heard that they are bringing out a kit towards the end of the year. The great thing about this is that K&F are traditionally cheaper than other filter suppliers (including Freewell), with exceptional quality.
