Freesat - Any Good?

It struck me tonight when looking through the planner that almost all of the programmes we watch and record are anything but Sky channel programmes :bonk:

This has got me thinking whether we should be looking at someone else to provide our tv package, and weirdly enough I've just seen a Freesat ad on the tv.

So, does anyone have it, and is it any good?
 
Have it. Very happy with it. Easy to install and easy to do feeds to additional rooms. Best of all, no monthly cost.
 
Yep I have it out here in Spain - More than enough channels, all the main ones. I do miss 'Dave' though, that's on Freeveiw, but not Freesat for some reason.
 
had a similar quandary, went for a freesat pvr and a cheap freeview box so we could get the QI channel, sorry, Dave.

Did well for us for a couple of years, just gone to virgin as sat reception and freeview suffer horridly in the rain here.
 
We changed from subscription sky to it as we were not watching anything on the 'paid' channels. Its fine for the amount we watch now, just need to work out what you have recently watched/what you would watch again that are on the subscription channels - if not get rid
 
There is another alternative to freesat, freesat from Sky is not publicised much by Sky but offers more channels than normal freesat, it only needs a sky box, dish and old sky card to receive as well.

It's all in the small print with Sky

For security reasons Viewing Cards may be inactivated from time to time. In this situation, if you wish to continue to receive all the encrypted Free to View channels, you will have to purchase a new viewing card at our then applicable standard charge.

It sounds like its reasonably good then.

We were thinking Freesat with one of the HD PVR recorders so we effectively have a similar set up to what we have now with Sky…only non of the cost pain!
 
My dad has freesat my inlaws have freeview+ in one room and youview in the other. Youview is the best hands down. They all do the same thing though, but youviews interface is a pleasure.

Just re-read the preceding posts, don't see any mention of Freeesat from Sky other than where you posted a link which you fail to explain very well (not everyone clicks links when on a phone/tablet). Freesat from Sky is not Freesat HD, which you called it.

Freesat from Sky and FreesatHD are two completely separate services.

We felt the same, most Sky channels we watched were free on either Freesat or Freeview so Sky got dumped (kept Phone/broadband though) so why pay Sky for watching repeats when we could do the same for free (not incl' buying the box) As tv had Freeview built in we bought a Freesat box/recorder, we can record two different channels on freesat, switch tv onto Freeview and watch a third channel on that while Freesat is recording the other two.

Dave, are you deliberately being obtuse?
You posted the SAME link as I had done - you didn't even need to click on it, the URL is there to be read.
That was why I jibed you about not reading before posting.

As for Sky's FreeSat service, and FreeSatHD - yes you are correct about them being separate entities, but I was meaning more that the service offered via Sky was High Def FreeSat, not to be confused with regular FreeSat which is only SD.

The point of all that was for the OP's benefit to look at and digest, not for you on your phone/tablet, so I expected the links to be utilised in order that he was clued up on the various options - especially the first link in relation to his current subscription notice period.

One thing I will point out, which you haven't, while trying to score in some pointless argument, is that Sky's HD FreeSat offering includes channel 5 HD, but FreeSat HD doesn't.
There's also a restriction on who can receive ITV1 HD in Scotland, which may not affect the OP, from both providers.

Freesat works just fine for me, Humax box gives much better picture quality too.

You still dont seem to get the basic facts, Freesat (and FreesatHD) have nothing to do with Sky, Freesat is not offered "via Sky", it might utilise the same satellites that Sky do, but so do many other providers, who pay the owners of the satellite system, Astra for the service.

Freesat (and Freesat HD) are owned and operated by a BBC / ITV consortium, and yes, as you said it offers less HD channels (if the user has a HD compatible box) than the Sky product.

You also need non-Sky equipment for Freesat.

Freesat from Sky is also available as a SD product (or HD product with the appropriate equipment), and also has more SD channels available free to air/view than Freesat does.

I think we're in exactly the same boat you were in Frank. I don't think our tv has freeview built in, but I do need to check that.

We'll keep sky for phone and broadband and are definitely looking at the options of dumping tv option!

We are in the process of dumping Sky..... however I cannot think of three things on TV at the same time i would want record / watch.... :)
 
Freesat is excellent, and if you can get Freeview you can add Dave as well - wouldn't have SKY if I were paid - nothing on it I'd want to watch, and the thought of paying money to the evil Murdoch empire is completely beyond the pale.

+1 for YouView. We've had it since before Christmas and its just a pleasure to use. So much more on there as well than just plain Freeview or FreeSat.
