Ive used frontpage in the past and found it was so easy to use. Since getting a new computer ive moved away from that and have been useing Kompozer. Im not getting on well with it.

What other free web building software is there i could use ?

I guess like myself you've moved from Windows to a Mac, as I had the same issue. At the moment I'm using Kompozer, it did take a while to get comfortable with it (still find it quirky)

I'd be interested in what other recommend for free apart from using a plain text editor as even though I can do HTML I prefer a WYSIWYG

Hey Richard,

Have you looked at wordpress with a custom template? Sites can look superb!

Throwing a curved ball into the mix...
There are quite a few good free server-side solutions as well as the paid-for solutions like SmugMug.
Google for 'open source content management system' - most hosting packages will be capable of supporting these as they only require PHP and MySQL.

The plus side is that there is nothing to install on your computer, so you can maintain your website from anywhere and any number of computers. It's also possible to have more than one person looking after the content. There are a wealth of plugins from galleries to shopping carts; so you can start simple and expand when you feel the need.

The down side is that documentation for open-source software is written by coneheads and can prove challenging to mere mortals. The other down side is that the plugins are open source too and the mind-set (and quality) can vary dramatically from plugin to plugin. The easiest way to do it is Google an example that's roughly what you want and use that as a start point.

This is one of my websites - it uses MODx for the main pages, and a free galley application called Coppermine for the gallery. I want tighter integration and am currently testing a MODx plugin which does a really nice job. It's a plugin which only works on the new version of MODx (currently v2.0 RC2) and it's really promising as it's been written from the ground up to be very powerful yet totally simple to integrate into any website layout. It does tagged galleries too - YAY!

there are a few people in the office that use

http://www.w3.org/Amaya/

instead of frontpage as its free, they seem to get on ok but have really limited use of it, they mostly insert page links etc between pre formed html documents.

Hey Richard,

Ive been looking at that, but im not sure my server will run it. Any idea how i can find out if it does ?

It needs to be able to run databases ie SQL. Do you use a hosting company or run on a server at home?

I use pixelpost with a basic template, modified to my own use. There are a couple of little things I still want to fiddle with, when I get the time and inclination.
Like Wordpress, it just needs the ability to run PHP and MySQL, and there are plenty of free templates and addons available.
