Free upgrade to Windows 10?

thats been there all the time. but just gives information, theres still no download link or update
Did you perform a Windows Update 'check for updates'? That is what made mine come alive yesterday.

Just thought I would mention I received a telephone call today form a foreign lady in what sounded like a busy office environment. The line was pretty poor but she was telling me she was ringing about "Windows" and asked me to turn on my computer. Pfffft. I'm assuming that notifications for updates, would be via your computer and not via phone call.

***DANGER, DO NOT Respond"

Well tonight I'm signing on the dotted line for a nice new laptop which presumably will still come with 8.1 and the first thing I do will be upgrade it to 10. As someone who still uses XP at home and at work this could be an interesting experience..............................

tried that above and didnt work for me either
still stes the same. win 10 reserved.. bloody thing!

Just updated mine from the update link earlier on here, all seems to be working fine.

Only thing I can't figure out is how to adjust the task bar transparency but, that's a minor niggle.

Went from 8.1 and, it took less than an hour, used custom settings rather than the express option.

Seems a lot more responsive so far.

Just upgraded my win7 64bit to 10 using the Media Creation Tool, I first made a usb stick installer as a back up (just in case) then ran MCT off the pc again and told it to upgrade, An hour later and I'm back up and running with all the old programs and links still in place :)

According to these guys http://www.askvg.com You must run MCT in Administrator and change your locale to US English to avoid problems with MCT I did that and it all went smoothly with no real interaction from me, even put my locale back to UK for me.

I wonder if the "Something Happened" error was because I selected UK English???

Well I upgraded and seem quite pleased. It doesnt seem as power hungry as 8. although I have had to reinstall drivers for sound and graphics card after panicking slightly. New version of internet explorer seems ok but I prefer chrome!

i used the w10 download link (64 bit) from the ms site and seems to be working fine - now up to 15% "upgrading windows" - not sure why some sites talk about having to delete files from a directory and do other fiddly things?

Possibly because people were like me with my W7 machine it had tried to do the update yesterday and failed, not that I knew anything about that, and again tonight and failed.

After that Windows Update kept insisting there were no updates available and the advice from MS was to delete everything from the download folder and run the updater from the command line.

Doing that started the download for me

That's the error they suggest running it in Administrator mode for.

I had the same issue, spotted it about an hour ago, For some reason though I have a Realtek sound chip, it installed Nvidia drivers (I have an Nvidia graphics card). Sorted that by reinstalling the Realtek drivers myself.

Hi Hugh

I was tired yesterday but am fairly sure the MCT needed my admin password to run but will double check when I try it again.

Good heads as I mentioned I will be doing I.e. to make sure I have up to date W10 drivers downloaded in readiness.

Steps I've used:

1: First things first, make sure you have everything backed up and saved. Also write down your current key for Windows 7 or 8.1.

2: Then download this little tool https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 . And use it to download an ISO for your version of Windows. Got Windows 8.1 Pro? Go with Windows 10 Pro. Got Windows 7 Home Premium? Go with Windows 10 home, etc..

3: Make a bootable USB stick with this: https://rufus.akeo.ie/ . Use GPT for partition table, and file system FAT32.

4: Then put the USB stick aside and install the Windows 10 upgrade through Windows update. The reason being that your old key won't work to activate Windows 10. But during the update process you automatically get a new key, a legitimate Windows 10 key.

5: Now once it's all installed use this tool: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html to find your new Windows 10 key. Make sure to write this down, so you can always find it.

6: Now with your new Windows 10 key you can install Windows 10 and activate it like you're used to. Boot from the USB stick, install Windows 10, install the drivers, activate and off you go.

I found that simply clicking on the "download tool now (64 bit version)" on the https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 link and following the prompts was all that was needed to upgrade. The process took a while, about 90 minutes before I was actually running w10. I had to do a final extra manual reboot at the end as it set the screen resolution really low rather than the native 2560x1440 res but the reboot seemed to fix this.

For those of you that have upgraded what is your HDD setup?

Reason I ask is that saw a ref elsewhere to the W10 installer being fussy about the is target drive partition?

My rig has the c drive as a partition with its second partition being e as of course d is reserved letter for optical drives hence the step to e. I also have three other physical drives with the data storage.

So how is your rig and what if any options did the installer offer during the process?

Mine is C and D as partitions on different drives, optical drive? What's that :p. And some hidden ones for recovery. And Z for backups, P for photos etc.

Anyway it replaces your current OS. No options that is where it goes.

D isn't reserved for optical, you can put that anywhere you want. It's just the next drive letter after the install partition. You'll also have a system partition not referenced by a drive letter.

I've lots of drives, but will just do my usual of removing all but the system drive, cloning it and upgrading that only.

Laptop has 2 drives, 1st is partitioned B (Recovery), C (OS+) 2nd drive is dedicated to post-processing.
No choice on where Win 10 went when I did the upgrade.

What a lot of fuss you all make!!!

Just Download, Hit the Install Button and sit back and it does it all by itself, How about that!!!

Yes I`ve got a Hybrid Drive with WIN8.1 on the SSD,(Y Drive) Programmes on C: Drive, it just sorts it out for you. The easiest Windows install ever requiring no input from you.

And as for ease of use, well it`s different but more of the same, yes you have a Start button with various Options but so did Win8 if you looked for it, give it a couple of weeks use and you`ll forget
what all the fuss is about,

Go for it you know you want to!!!

I had no idea I was making a fuss, but thanks for letting me know.

I think the "fuss" is where people give very complex instructions (at least for a non tech person) such as deleting files from a directory, running commands etc when all you need to do is actually click "upgrade" when it asks if you want to upgrade to w10.

So when someone gives valid advice for people having issues downloading, or installing, your response is don't make a fuss, just hit upgrade, rather like you just hit post reply :D

Well finally got 10 installed with a key, but cant install my nvidia drivers and i have a black border round my screen.
Also how do you use the apps without creating a microsoft account or needing to login to windows.

Unfortunately for some, like myself, it really was that easy. I got my update on release day, heck it was downloaded in the background without me even realising and I was driving in my car all day!! But unfortunately there are a few where they don't get the download and they'll have to try and do it manually. Then there are some who run into issues when applying it.

I took @stryvya comments as lighthearted and not to be taken too seriously since reading this thread you can easily see that people have many different experiences.

When it goes well it goes really well, when it doesn't it's fair enough to make some fuss.

You at least have to login to windows once, I mean how else is it supposed to store your files and settings against your profile? But you don't have to use an online account if you don't want to. Just created a local account. An upgrade would have done that automatically.

I don't want to have to login though, i when i switch my pc on i want it to go straight to the desktop.

The "desktop" tile seems to be absent now.....is there a one click way to get back to the desktop without having to minimise all the open applications?

Bob
