Free software to set black and white points

Hi
I have recently been on a photography course where I was shown how to improve the contrast of photos taken through a window by moving the black and white points on the histogram to stretch it out and make it fill the whole width. He used Lightroom but said that there was free software that would do this.
What is the best free software to do this?

Digikam does it with it's "levels" command. It also does a full suite of other things.

Darktable looks very much like Lightroom and is free. Haven't used it myself but it might be worth checking.

Thanks. This software is really good and does what I wanted.
Do you know if you can use it to find photos by the date they were taken or if not some other software that can?

I dunno, never did that.
All my photos get saved into their own folders by date, manually.

Digikam once again can do that. It has a calendar view as well as it's tool to set the black and white points.

The "Dates" view organizes your photographs based on their dates. digiKam uses either the EXIF date or, if no EXIF date is available, the last modification time of the file.

It does a heck of a lot more besides.

Is there any other software that can do this?
