Yes
Not really "Free", but only a 35p text.
I've got my code, but the local EE shop had no stock :( (said they were queuing out the door)

Exclusive customer reward scheme ‘EE Power’ launches to ensure customers stay fully charged
  • All customers offered a free EE Power Bar – a portable smartphone charger – which can be swapped for a fully charged one in all EE stores as often as needed
  • Innovative ‘never ending power’ scheme is the latest initiative in the brand’s commitment to reward customers

All eligible* customers, including small business and corporate customers, can get their free EE Power Bar when the promotion launches in the coming weeks by texting ‘POWER’ to 365 to receive a promotional code. Texts cost 35p and customers can collect their free EE Power Bar by redeeming this code at any EE store across the UK. Each Power Bar typically gives one full smartphone charge per use.

Just be aware the terms and conditions say you have to return it in 18 months time else they'll charge you £5. If you damage it or loose it you have to pay £20 for a replacement.

Having said that, I've just picked up one for keeping in the camera bag as it has a little led torch built in. The code took about 5 hours to come through.

I had to follow 3 links to find where it says that, and in fact on the terms and conditions it's stated as "your free hire of the power bar".
Which is a bit bloody dodgy really :(

Yeah it's not mentioned in any of the headlines and the shop don't say anything either. But after 18 months of use the battery is going to be well on it's way to being knackered so I'm quite happy to hand it back then.

If you haven't lost it or knacked it by then ;).

If I have then chances are my whole camera bag will have gone as well and £20 for the charger will be the least of my worries :(

thanks, I did find it after scouring their site.

On the flip side, IF I were to keep it, I guess £5 isn't a huge amount!

You can pick up a Pebble unit ( similar to the EE offer) for £12 from MyMemory. It's slightly lower power rating but it is an outright purchase. Had one for years and is a great emergency backup

The advantage with the EE power bar is that you can swap it for a fully charged one at any EE shop, pretty useful when you're out and about :)

Got mine and the mrs's today. She's charging her phone off it currently. I asked the sales assistant and he said he knew nothing about the £5 charge...

Wonder if that counts towards the 18 months if you swop it. Plus you could get an old one with poor charge. Think I would stick with my original unless it was an emergency.

The text message in which the code was sent to you contains a link to the conditions of offer ;)

As I'm sure I've already mentioned, a link to a website does not meet the statutory standard required in the Consumer Contracts Regs 2013.

A durable medium is defined in regulation 5 as 'paper or email, or any other medium that:
  • allows information to be addressed personally to the recipient,
  • enables the recipient to store the information in a way accessible for future reference for a period that is long enough for the purposes of the information, and
  • allows the unchanged reproduction of the information stored'.

My confirmation text only reads

"You've got your Power Bar! Great news. Enjoy using it, and remember you can switch it for another one at any EE store as many times as you like. (Free MSG)"

Not that one, the one before which sent you the code.

"Welcome to EE Power! Take this code xxxxxxxx to any EE Store to get your Power Bar (subject to stock) This text costs 35p. Care & T&Cs at ee.co.uk/eepower"

Doesn't a pdf of the terms count as a durable medium? I'd have said it meets those requirements

I tried to get one this morning, but got a text back saying I needed to try again after 24th June as they were out of stock.

I work for EE small business and the amount of people asking about these is unbelievable. They've had 5 times the uptake on them and have had 1 million text codes go out with stock to cover them in the 4 days since they were launched.. They have seperate stock in the EE stores to cope with the swaps when people need them but are awaiting stock of them hence the 24th June texts. we had 75,000 text requests in the first 2 hours for them then they were launched on the 16th hence the slight delay in the texts coming through! They're a good little device, There are cheaper ones on the market and yes I think it has to be given back at the end of the contract which is a bit pants but what can you do :-)
