Looking for a FREE MKV to AVI/DVD converter software. Any suggestions?

mkv2vob should do this for you, and it's freeware as well. It will also convert mkv files to ps3 format, and split the files to under 4gig as well dso the ps3 can play them, not more blueray discs needed....Great stuff

If you're on a PC - Gotsent
If you're on a Mac - Virtual Box running windows with Gotsent inside (it's that good)

It doesn't rerender, unlike pretty much all the others, just opens the container then repacks as an MP4. You can then either rename to M4V or AVI. It's superfast, even inside a virtual machine with 1MB RAM, and one CPU core.

If it were any good it would be supported on the major commercial media streamers.

Not everyone wants to be tied to a PC to watch the media.

MKV is capable of multiple audio streams, multiple video streams and multiple subtitle streams all in one file.

And therein lies the problem with it.

The client side constantly needs additional codecs to be added to support what's being dropped into the MKV file, and this becomes a support nightmare for an appliance vendor.

The WDTV neil_g referred to above will not play all .mkv files, audio is missing from many. They increased the number of codecs back in April it supports but don't fully support all codecs.

This is why most appliance vendors don't provide it on a platform because it introduces horrendous support issues where non technical people are concerned. A user will expect a file with an mkv extension to play perfectly, and if it doesn't a support call ensues. It's also garnered a reputation for being resource intensive, so the relatively low powered media streamers would struggle with playback.

It needs more control over the container and codecs within, whilst in principle an excellent concept, it's trying to be all things to all men and will struggle to deliver. It needs to evolve more standards, until then, it's not going to get picked up in the mainstream.

so you'd like just one audio format, and just one video format ?

divx and xvid are different.
there are MANY different codecs required just for wmv... the only consistent format so far has been mov - yet you'd be hard pushed to find a device that isn't a computer that can play them for you.

Just to add, WD have updated there player to include dts downmixing now.
Sweet player. :)

Or have a look at the hdx1000, awesome with oversight installed .

Last week, I downloaded a MKV file and wanted to convert it to MOV for playback with my Quick Time Player. I tried many MKV Converters, but almost all of them disappointed me. Finally, recommended by one of my friends, I used Moyea MKV Converter. It helps me easily convert my MKV files and let me enjoy MKV video with my Quick Time Player. With this program, you guys can easily convert MKV files to various video/audio formats like AVI, MPEG, WMV, WMA, MOV, MKV, FLV, MP3, AC3, OGG, FLAC, and etc.
What's the most, this converter applies advanced audio and video sync technology which greatly ensure excellent output video and audio.
