Can anyone recommend a free Lightroom 5 course from the very basics /start please?

I learnt to use it through youTube (although no doubt training courses are the preferred option for some).

If you want something for free, maybe start here and see if it's enough to get you going:

I have been using LR since Saturday and I have found this guys tutorials to be great from workflow a-z and his results are amazing as you can see in the embedded link. I have linked to Vid1 but he goes into each feature in each video. They are around 17 mins each but worth the watch.

I used the Anthony Morganti videos that Rob linked above. They're a great place to start with good explanations, however there is a danger of learning to process 'the Anthony Morganti way' which isn't always appropriate.

have a look for french togger serge ramelli he does some cracking stuff

Yep, if I need to know anything I go for an Adam Morganti or Gavin Hoey tutorial on YouTube. They explain everything really well and once you get going it's pretty simple.

Too right!
Anyone who advocates slamming the Highlights and Shadows sliders to their extreme positions has got to be questioned, and I think that is very bad advice.

I've seen some shocking "tuition" on YouTube, and unless you know the credentials of the presenter, I'd treat everything with suspicion, there is a lot of Bad Information on there.

Personally, I prefer the tutorials by Julieanne Kost on the Adobe Systems site.
Brief, concise and well presented and with no umm.. or err.. they at least represent the views of Adobe.
Unlike the Tim Grey/ B&H marathon above, the Julieanne Kost presentations are quite short, so people like me with a limited attention span can still remember what was mentioned at the start when they finish.

It's horses for courses... he has a definite "style" which you either love or hate. I started off following him but I find all of his photos look much the same - massive amounts of processing and pseudo artificial a lot of the time. However, I will say his free videos are great to show you what the LR effects do (as well as some PS stuff) and because he takes processing to the max, you can really see the effects in action. Whilst I wouldn't want my photos to look like his, watching "extreme processing" can be a great way to learn.

I'd agree that it's good to see 'extreme processing' so that you can understand what the different processes do and also so that you can make choices about whether to deliberately leave your images natural looking or to push the effects side.

From time spent wading through some of the photo groups on facebook & elsewhere, very often those beautiful 'natural' photos that skilled toggers appreciate will get overlooked, while hideously gaudy or hugely over-cooked HDR shots get all the attention. Target market & all that: I think a skill little discussed in processing is knowing what will please the people to whom you will present the images.
