Is there any free photo editing software available? Used to have Corel Draw years ago (not a free one) but every thing these days seems to be monthly subscription and I wouldn’t warrant that ongoing cost for how often I use it at this stage.

Only really want to do the basics at the moment such as crop, lighten/darken, add text, perhaps a bit of touching up.

Thanks for your help.
Mick

Googles Snapseed is free and good for basic stuff.

Edit - I know you asked for free, but not all are sub' based cost, Affinity is a one off cost, 6 mth free trial at the minute, full cost is around £68, but they have sales from time to time and you could get it at around 40-50% off, 6 mth trial will see you through to the "Black Friday" sales if they have one.

Affinity link.

Thank you all. I will look at the ones shown above and do a search as suggested by ancient mariner.

You folks are so helpful and I appreciate it.

You may not be aware that Canon has their own free software

If you use an Apple desktop or laptop computer, the built in Preview application will do all that. I seldom need to use anything else.

Personally, I would give the 'free' bit a miss & go for Affinity - it's basically/almost Photoshop with just a one off payment & you can often find it on offer too. A couple of years ago I got it for about £24!!

I was about to say the same thing
Affinity is excellent it’s worth paying a few pounds for something that in my opinion at least is as good as photoshop

Besides the ones mentioned (RawTherapee, Darktable, Gimp), there is Photodiva, it's a portrait picture editor.
Snapseed and Lightroom Mobile are great if you use smartphone for your photography and editing.

Do you plan to edit on tablet PC or Mac.?

I use GIMP with RawTherapee as my raw converter. I am on Windows 10 and a Canon user, so my raw files are CR2 or CR3. Drag one of these into GIMP and it automatically fires up RawTherapee to do the conversion and then offers all the editing tools I need.
