GIMP is an open source Photoshop alternative.
Under Linux you have:
Darktable - an alternative to lightroom
Raw Therapee - Raw converter
(and GIMP)
There are also others.
I've always wondered how I'd get on using a completely open source system but as yet I've never invested the time to try it.

Gimp is very close to the older versions of photoshop, it hasn't got all the bells and whistles but it will do most of the things photoshop will, even if you have to "work around" some things.
