Hellooooooooooo,

I'm new and I just wondered if anyone could recommend any free photo editing software... for things like making a pic black and white, but have one area a colour etc

:)

Picasa is pretty good for a freebie search for it on google.

yep, GIMP is great for people just starting out and those that want more advanced features.

It's best to start with it and you can learn the functions, compared with something like Picasa where you will hit its limits and then have to learn GIMP anyway :)

Thank you :D

I am hoping my mate has a copy of photoshop for me :)

Gimp is really good if your wanting to do things the legal way... ive heard its easy enough to get a copy of cs5 tho..

not that ive done it personally :P but ya know =]

for really simple things i find windows live photo viewer to do the job like..

for basic things like redeye removal, cropping/resizing, adding filters, converting to B&W, adding borders/text/bevels etc.... IrfanView is pretty handy, I have PS & LR but still find IrfanView a useful program.

It's also got bulk resizing which is very handy.

A year ago I'd have said Gimp. Now I'm more interested in getting the pictures right in the first place and really don't want to spend ages fiddling so Picassa is where it's at for me.

Adobe do 30day free trials of all there software.

You could always do 30days of elements, then 30days of Photoshop and then even 30days of Lightroom if you wanted... :)

Personally I have never enjoyed gimp, maybe I expected to much or missed PS to much but i just ever felt at home with it.

whereas for quick single click/email/printing options Picassa is nice ad easy, when I have installed it for clients etc no one has ever complained

GIMP will be more comprehensive for you I think, Picasa you may find a bit easier to get into.

Well, my wife uses Picasa for the basics, anything complicated gets email to me so I can use photoshop or GIMP. It really depends on the level of editing you want to get in to.

If you even suspect you may need to do some heavy editing, start with GIMP/Photoshop straight away, absolutely no point learning 2 programs.

...then reinstall your computer and start all over ;)
