Free anti virus ?

Anyone know of a good reliable free anti-virus that i can download. I'm fed up with all the problems AVG kept coming up with, like "email scanner not working or Download manager not connected " enough is enough.
 
avast home is free and very good
 
avg anti virus - superb with free updates.

combine that with the free zone alarm firewall too and you're laughing!!

As above and also try Comodo firewall too.
 
I switched from AVG to Avira which is very gentle on your rescources. The only downside i can see is that it has a pop up that appears when you update. I can live with that as I have found that other free anti virus programs and a lot of pay-for ones eat into your system rescources too much.
 
Avast here too.. easy to tell when it's scanning and to switch off individual services such as mail scanning etc.
 
Yup, Avast is the one I point my family and friends (hey, you're all sort of friends (in a loose sort of sense!) too I suppose...) towards. Although the new AVG free version looks very user-friendly too.
 
Most of my friends use AVG the free version and have had no problems with it, me personally, I've paid for mine, got the full version from AVG and have had trouble free protection from them for several years, after getting rid of Norton. Cost me £45 for a 2 year licence, thats Antivirus, Spyware, Freewall plus a host of other bits all in one package, runs in the background, no problems so far with version 8.

Ad Aware SE Personal gets the thumbs up for me. No longer updated, but still a good anti virus none the less, still give your PC a good going over with something more thorough though.

Ad-Aware is anti-spyware..
not an anti-virus, there are many things that ad-aware wont pick up that an antivirus will.
 
Avast is supposed to be good.

I don't use anything as I have a Mac now but used to use AVG on my PC.

Why do people pay for anti-virus software? It's a complete rip-off. I have had Norton and McAfee and they are both total crap. CONSTANTLY pestering you for updates and permissions and you have to pay at least £30 each year for the latest version. What a con.
 
Used AVG free for years... but lately it has been using so much resources i can hardly use photoshop at the same time as a scan is running. I might change to AVAST I think.
 
I used AVG for years until I was pointed in the direction of Avast! It’s absolutely spot on, also I use Firefox 3 as my web browser with an add on called Adblock which is totally free. My browsing speed is so mush faster and secure using Firefox IMHO!
 
Ive used AVG (free edition) for quite a few years now. The latest free edition AVG 8 has the facility to alter the speed of scan which alows more applications to run at the same time without unduly effecting other application performance.
This has worked good for me with the speed set on "automatic scan" on the speed slidebar.
I don't have any problems with any automatic downloads or components not working properly, if I am conected to the internet when switching on.
I know that this is not the answer to the original post asking for an alternative set up, but wondered if a bit of tweaking with the programme settings could prevent the problems encoutered?

If you don't like AVG (I don't either) then I recommend Avira or Avast.

Personally I prefer Avira - light on resources BUT there is a single pop-up when you update. Personally I can live with that.
 
Has AVG not Has AVG not recently had a major update? This could explain the problems. If you wish to keep your AVG uninstall it and get the latest version from their website.
 
Could you let us know how you get on with Avast?
I'm tempted to switch when i get my new PC but i'm not sure yet.
 
I downloaded & installed Avast and was very impressed with it, until i realised my CD-ROM had dissapeared and i've been trying all ways i know to get it back ! I've now uninstalled Avast but still can't get my CD-ROM to show/work ??? I've posted a new thread on this forum asking for help, hopefully someone will know what to do. Am i the only one who has these annoying problems or what ?
 
can u see the cd rom in the device manager or is it lost in my computer.

In device manager try a scan for hardware changes.. Otherwise open the case and unplug the cd cables and re-connect them.

What type of pc have you got? Dell Optiplex by any chance?

Have you got any roxio software?

another vote for avira antivir. I used AVG but got hacked off with the continual "this edition expires", having to go and re-install with a new version. Its a cheap stunt to make you think that you have to pay to keep using it. I look after about 6-8 machines for friends/family so they increased my workload for nothing!

The stupid farce with the linkscanner they bundled in a little while ago was pathetic too.

On top of that the resource hogging was getting on my nerves - this isn't a slow machine (T7250/2Gb) but when AVG was on the go it was nearly unusable. The final straw came when it flagged a false positive and it couldn't heal it, move to vault or delete it, so it just came up on every scan.

Avira runs and I don't even notice it, works quicker too.
 
I know you wanted a free antivirus, but you might want to consider www.iolo.com and download a trial version of their antivirus software or even System Mechanic Professional. After installing, when you open the software, you will see an offer of 50% (IIRC) discount if you buy the software.
 
I use AVG8 and find it ok with no problems so far,and it seems to detect anything that is thrown at it.The only problem is when it is scanning it tends to slow the computer down a little,but if it is getting too much of a problem,i just pause the scan and when i've finished what i'm doing then i restart it again.
 
I had been using AVG (free version) for about 2 years or more but found the latest version caused hiccups on my system (XP and Firefox).
I swapped out to Avast! about 3 months ago and have been very pleased with it.
 
I used to use AVG for years aswell, never really had a problem with it, it just got a bit intrusive, so i switched to avast, but I found that a bit too intrusive aswell.

I found avira to be the least intrusive, and acording to latest tests it is the most secure and has the smallest footprint on your recourses.
