splog make another user account with admin privs and try running the anti vir in that

probably won't work but has on occasion.

For what it is worth, the company I work for used to sell Symantec with all of our pharmaceutical systems, Since I joined I have tested most of the major products and we are now official silver status resellers for AVG, I cannot recommend them highly enough. The free edition is the same program as the paid edition except for minor extras like scan scheduling which as a home user really doenst matter. There are other good programs out there but AVG is the most rounded and least invasive out of them all.

Used to be, not anymore... Now it's incompatible with lots of newer apps (Sandboxie for starters)... It's an excellent non-intensive AV if you happen not to use any of the apps it doesn't like.

Avira, on the other hand, does the same job as AVG with no incompatibilities so far.

If you know the program has issues but is genuine then add it to the exception list, we use our own bespoke software and it works fine. What sort of issues does it have with sandboxie?

I used it for a good few years but towards the end of last year, it could not find the AVG server for an update.

Comodo does me just fine these days and is not nearly so memory-intensive.

No, it's not a firewall issue. The 2 programs are incompatible, ie: they cannot run together on the same PC. AVG causes sandboxie to crash on opening.

Free..? and you expect it to work properly.??

Of course I am assuming that you are not putting this 'free' AV software on the PC you use for your images.... are you?

IMHO Trend Micro software is great - not free, but it works, and works better than Norton (or whatever they call themselves now) as it doesn't 'take over' your system.

Do your research before you post. Norton used to have a problem with system resource hogging but they have listened to the critics and produced Norton Internet Security 2009 which works a treat and hardly uses any resources.

I'd consider that a blessing to be honest

 Funnily enough, it worked quite well on Vista. It never really gave me any issues. The firewall app was quite easy to use too.

I changed from AVG to Avast then recently the browsers stopped working after 30 mins or so of internet use and when I disabled avast they worked fine. This is happening every night, so Im thinking Id best change back to AVG.

Ive stopped various modules of avast from running one by one but cant seem to find which the problematic one is. Once I stop it running from the task bar then web pages open up again. But why does it work fine for the first half hour?

I use Avast and spybot search and destroy.

I used to use AVG but it missed a trojan depite being kept up to date. Avast found it.

I find that I have a few problems with Skype if left open and I'm not sure this isn't something to do with Avast.

Now I only open skype when I want it.

I'm an Avast user - it's far less cluttered and faffy than when I had Norton installed, and seems to pick up everything!! :)

The average user using forums and the likes of bbc.co.uk etc will virtually never come across a virus/worm/trojan etc so those that are picking these up have to ask themselves where are they going that is doing this in the first place.

Try Dr. Web's Cureit

http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/

I found this one quite good as well for freeware. Doesn't install on your PC as such, runs standalone so you need to download the latest version whenever you need to scan your PC.

I switched from AVG to AVAST about 6 months ago, found a whole load of suspect files that AVG didn't pick up, also use ZoneAlarm free, no problems since.
