Hi all

Any suggestions and reccomendations for free anti virus software?

Avast is good avg used to be good but people have problems uninstalling so my choice would be avast

clamwin or avira for me, if your computer is beasty then avg perhaps but it's turned from being quite streamlined to being a bit of a heffer, the popups in avira are marginally annoying but apart from that it's nice enough :)

Of course I am assuming that you are not putting this 'free' AV software on the PC you use for your images.... are you? :thumbsdown:

IMHO Trend Micro software is great - not free, but it works, and works better than Norton (or whatever they call themselves now) as it doesn't 'take over' your system.
 
I always recommend AVG. I find Avast makes your PC run a little slower than when running AVG.

Both are good and you wont go wrong installing either but I think AVG is excellent
 
I personally use windows live one care as it just does what its supposed to do and you dont even know its there and its cheap to 30quid for three PCs
 
MacOS, well it was free with my computer :)

You'll find free AV software works as well, if not better than paid for, provided you don't need all the bundled features you're really paying for. If all you want is an app to run scheduled scans, and monitor everything coming through, then Avira or Avast are your picks (with Avira pipping it marginally). AVG was the mutts until about a year ago when they made it a little more resource hungry. It's also incompatible with a few apps which have crept into the mainstream.

..... and if you REALLY want to pay for AV, then Kapersky.
 
AVG free - works flawlessly here on Vista
 
I used to use Avast but it was missing quite a few viruses, one which started munching all the files on our servers at work. I've installed Avira now and it catches stuff Avast didn't. Also, Adaware are doing a free anniversary edition at the moment which gives real-time anti spyware if that's of any interest.

As for AVG, I found it caused quite a few problems with Outlook and blocked send/receive connections frequently so I've never gone back to it.

You could also look at Revo uninstaller which is good for removing applications as it hunts down all the registery files and files on the hard drive which bad uninstallers leave behind.

AVG and Avast are the two main free ones, although at least one (AGV I think) has the rather annoying habit of sounding a siren that makes you almost **** yourself when it finds something (although generally harmless).

Paid for, NOD is my recommendation, followed by Kapersky.:)

Yes i am an AVG user have been for over Five years, faultless. I support that with Ad-aware and SUPERAntiSpyware both excellent.
 
AVG!... But if you don't mind paying a small amount.... My other half has Kaspersky and swears by it. (Not at it)
 
Another vote for AVG for free, and if you are prepared to pay then nod 32.
As an aside you should also run a spyware checker like malwarebytes too.
I don't make anywhere near the money from removing nasties from my clients computers since I started insisting on a combination of these two :thinking:

AVG for me, as said previously Avast has that annoying siren followed by an American telling you that the virus database has been updated.

Avira is another one, apparently it isn't a resource hog like AVG and Avast.
 
If you have online banking with barclays, you can get a free year of kapersky full version. check the barclays page after login i think.personally i use the paid version of avg and have no problems
 
I've used AVG Free for years, never had any trouble.
 
AVG and Ad-Aware, been keeping my system in good health for a year or so without any problems :)
 
Avira and Spybot for me.

For a tenner a year you can upgrade Avira for email protection etc. Avira always comes out tops for Virus ids compared to AVG / Avast in magazine reviews.
 
Interesting thread, I'm after an anti-virus program now that Windows 7 wont let me use Norton 360 :shrug: Even the beta won't accept my still active licence key.

Ridiculous.

After reading this thread, curiosity got the better of me.
I cracked and downloaded 2 virus checkers linked from the Apple website, Avast was one of them.
After 13 months of reckless web browsing, this is the result.

I'm with cowasaki on this one, mac's don't need virus software.

I installed the AVG anti-virus software as suggested but it can't touch the git of a virus in my netbook and this virus is called Zafi. b? :bang:

Jeez.... this is such an annoying and yet very clever virus! I've developed a kind of respect for it and imagine it as some kind of living thing that I just have to kill....NOW IT'S WAR :D This nasty little worm is gonna die (by hammer, if I have to) :help:

Macs aren't immune, they are safer only because very few inerds can be arsed to write infections for an obscure unpopular (comparatively) OS.
With popularity comes.....infexuns, its only a matter of time, hold on to your AV software, its bound to be worth a punt sooner or later.
 
Avast at the moment for me. Previously used AVG but it kept blocking certain files that I needed from work for some reason, so I changed to Avast and had no problems since. I don't download much and don't visit that many websites so I guess I don't tend to attract the beefier viruses anyway.

This virus won't allow me to get onto the Internet and blocks AV software in its tracks... I've tried various zafi killers but it either stops them or they ask me to go to a website to register and Zafi ain't gonna let me do that :bang:

Are you doing your killing in "safe mode"?

If not, I suspect thats where you're going wrong :)
 
personally i would reinstall. best way to make sure you got rid of it and give you a clean notebook to use

Yip, used both of these for years.
Not a hiccup with them.
Have Spybot Search & Destroy and Hijack This also.
All freebies.
