Free anti-virus software.. are they ok or a no no?

haha, yes I must admit I'm not a fan since they brought out a virus definition update last year that identified Sophos itself as a threat and quarantined it killing all protection :bang:

yeah fine. been using avast for years.

these days AVG is bloated and not as reliable as it used to be.

+1. I used AVG until v7 at which point it became as Norton AV and resource-hogged.

Avast is great

+1. I have since switched to this.

I use MSE, SpyBot, Malwarebytes and SpywareBlaster all free if you run the last three on manual scan.

+1 - run a scan on a weekly basis

eurgh i hate zonealarm, biggest annoyance of a software package ever.

anothther software that was great until it started to interfere with some progs like Alcohol.
