Not all surprises are pleasant. That's a really clever idea.

I like the idea behind this, but I think you are right it is a bit static and missing that certain something, what do you think you could have done differently?

....... drawn blood? Seriously, I can't think of a way you could 'animate' the hand unless you took the shot while trying to shake the mouse trap off your hand. The technical problems would make my brain hurt, though. Perhaps someone else will come up with a more sensible suggestion. :)

Jean

Things I learnt:

Sitting and thinking about it doesn't necessarily result in an idea

Well that was certainly true for me but you have come up with a great idea

Maybe having something in the trap that you were reaching for could have made less static... or gripping the fingers on either side into the carpet to show the pain?

Great idea though - meets the theme brilliantly

Thanks for the comments folks, very encouraging.

I had thought of actually letting the trap go off on Carolyn's hand but decided the pain I would suffer wasn't worth it. Seriously though, some motion in the hand would make quite a difference thanks jeangenie & daysleeper40

What a great take on the theme and it gave me an idea too - how about you were shown taking your hand out of a large tin of chocolates and had the trap on your hand (Not that I would ever do such a thing :naughty:, but it might protect the biscuit tin :D)

But that's just my evil mind working.

:clap::clap:

Ouch! Certainly a different sort of surprise, I like Jill's idea of the chocolate tin trap, maybe keep that in mind if we get a reshoot card?

Thanks for the comments. I think everything is up for a reshoot. Perfection! I spit on perfection!!!:naughty:

Opposites. "As different as chalk and cheese?" I don't think I've quite got the angle right.

What I've learnt:
I might be losing my battle against artificial light. (To be fair I don't have lighting apart from a mispurchased flash that I'm not keen on).

I need to work on visualising how things will look out of the camera.

Backgrounds are important and I don't have much apart from some white melamine. Made a kitchen and there were some bits left over - that's always worrying.

Simple, clear, colourful and meets the brief nicely :)

2nd interpretation of chalk and cheese this week :)

Lighting looks even and well done on this one!

That's a nice shot, I'll be very picky to say the odd crumb of crust on the plate is distracting but that can be ignored when you look at the rest of the image, the lighting is fine.

I'm guessing that whilst you live in france you aren't actually french (at least if you are you surprise me in your choice of cheese).

Very colourful...it's nice, I like it..

As Dark Star said second version on this Clalk/Cheese... but very different.

I think just a tiny amount of blue saturation would make a lot of differents.

Got to say that is serious looking cheese knife...

I like this very much. It does look kind of French! It reminds me of lots of picnics in France when the kids were little and loved 'La Vache qui Rit' which wasn't available in the UK then.

The colours are great and give a strong visual link right through the image. I think the few crumbs are realistic - French bread is very crumbly. The lighting looks fine to me.

And I have to say this - Great minds think alike :lol:

Looking forward to your Week 6

Jean

A very good shot, and good interpretation. The lighting has worked well for me, and the colours are good and clear. That is one nasty looking cheese knife though

I really like this shot. The diagonals on the tablecloth lead the eye through the picture and the blue of the plate sets of the contents. You say you don't like the light but I think it looks evenly lit and the angle is good too.:clap:

Not French but loving it here. Vache qui rit (Dairylea) is very popular with the French - not my first choice to eat! but colourful label.

I had noticed the crumbs but decided to keep them in.

Having trouble with the quotes so thankyou everyone for your comments. I'm taking more photos and really enjoying it again. It's lovely to have such a friendly supportive forum - definitely the best on t'interweb!!!:thumbs::thumbs:

First thoughts were of my guitars but I decided after a few attempts to try something else. I'm sure I'll get more guitars in later.:naughty:
Right here he is then Casper, definitely special a 15 month old Belgian Shepherd we got over here so much energy and a bit of a lunatic but very friendly. Behaves immpeccably, when he feels like it!

Learning:
It's difficult to get animals to be awake and sit still. I'm not sure if the the slightly blurred teeth are out of focus or suffering from dog movement.
A tripod can sometimes be less than helpful.

A lovely looking dog, and he does look special indeed. My money on those teeth is dog movement.... Animals don't like to do still when awake very well...

That's a good choice for this subject...he looks a bit of a hand full...

surprised you managed anything in focus with any animal shots...

and well done Casper...

Seem to have missed your 52 altogether :S

You have done a great job so far, keep it up. Really like the reflections and opposites :)

So handsome and he looks full of fun. I love his colour against the background.

I agree the slight blur is probably dog movement and you've done well to get such a good shot with a lively hound like Caspar. I think you were really brave (and patient) to use a tripod for this. :)

Did you crop the shot at all? It would be nice to see just a little more of his neck to balance things up a bit.

I hope we meet him again later in this challenge. :)

Jean

Handsome looking dog :) Most of the specials are personal naturally I guess - families, pets, cuddly toys :)

Animal shots are hard and unpredictable I guess - so well done for catching him so still!

What was he focusing on? Were you using something to hold his attention? :)

Great profile of a very hansome doogie. Really shows the proud nature of the breed.

I like the clarity of the subject against the blurred background, which I am informed is a good thing;)

well done:clap:

He is a beautiful looking beast, nicely caught.

Nicely caught and good interpretation on the theme

Good DoF and the colours of the background complement the dog's.

Have you got a portrait version which shows more of the dog's upper body?

Good take on teh Ooposites there with Chalk & Cheese, nice clear shot as well

Lovely dog there

Thanks for the comments everyone. I'll get up to date with mine ASAP.

Crowds, what crowds? In the middle of nowhere here. I tried the market on market day and there were literally 2 people there! Had a great flock of cranes flew over on their way north for the summer but they were too high for my lens - so the closest thing I could find was the group of cows (not enough to be a herd) on the farm next door.
I have learnt that when a theme sounds like it might be easier it isn't.
Taking birds in flight needs lots of practice and a longer lens
I don't really miss there being no crowds. I like it here.

I like this shot...another two company three a crowd...

The first two look so much the same I thought you had cloned them...

Take another look it's brilliant...

Defidnitely a crowd when they're that close. Good job they're herbivores and probably don't eat cameras.

It's a great shot - well composed, nicely lit and excellent detail in the fur. I actually went out looking for cattle for my Crowd and didn't find any today, so I'm quite jealous of this.:clap:

I'm glad I'm not the only to find that 'easy' themes turn out to be anything but.

Jean

A very nice take on the theme.

Looks like it's crowded to me  and you've got such fantastic definition on their hides and love the colours too.

I also had to look really hard where I live and like you am happy being crowd free :D

Let's hope next week's challenge is a bit easier :bang::bang::bang:

Wealth - Bentleys have always been a symbol of wealth to me and I saw this one and thought it fitted the theme.

Wealth.jpg

I'll edit to put in learning later as I'm off to the vet's.

nicely done, great take on the theme shame the car's suroundings aren't a little more glamerous :)

It looks a tiny bit dark on my monitor and I agree with Toothie about the background too. But it's a beautiful car and certainly conveys wealth very well indeed.

Really like your crowds shot too.

Mark

Very nice car. compositionally, have you tried a 10x8 crop of this image? I think there is alot of space on the left that and top of the image that isn't adding anything. However, I do like the image and I think the contrast of the car and the surroundings work well together although perhaps not 100% within the scope of this theme.

Thanks for the comments guys I maybe could lighten it a little although it looked fine on my monitor. I think the crop is worth a look Simon I had played with some crops but wasn't sure about the results. The town - Aubeterre - seems quite wealthy but I agree that's not exactly the impression I've captured except for the car itself.
I've learnt there's more to the theme than the main object in the image.
I need to consider backgrounds and crops more
I need to take more shots in the first place and cansider other angles .

Colour looks fine to me Frank  and it is a personal interpretation of wealth. My picture this month wouldn't say wealth to anyone without the story behind it.

I agree about the crop though so that there's more focus on the car. Other than that :clap:

That's a lovely car...and yes you need a bit of money to running a old car like that...

Yes the background doe's take a little of the impact from the car, but you have to work with what you got at the time and I think you've done well...just a tad more of a crop and it's a winner for me...
