For some reason the frame number on my 5D recently jumped from 2539 to 7176.

I guess it doesn't really matter, but I'm the tidy-minded sort - you know, train-spotting, stamp-collecting - and I'd quite like to keep tabs on how many pics I've taken.

Any suggestions how I can get it back to where it was?

Using a memory card from another camera or using a memory card in another camera can affect the frame numbers.

If you put a card in that had been used on a different camera with a higher number could it have carried on from that one?

You can fix it. Format a CF card and copy file number 2529 back to the card, place the card back in the camera and take another shot. File numbering should continue from 2540.

Tha might work:shrug:
if not do that but reset the cameras file numbering first.

Ok there's a couple of options there I can try.

This has explained something for me. The 5D was a "refurb" from the Canon Ebay shop. I guessed that it had done about 2400 shots prior to me purchasing it which seemed reasonable. Ok it was a bit of a coincidence that my then current 40D had done about the same number but hey - coincidences do happen.

Now I realise that the frame number was governed by the CF card not the camera.....
